Description	:	OBITUARY : GEORGE F. BLOOM, SR., 87, of 14352 Charmian Road, Waynesboro, a retired chief warrant officer, died at 10:50 p.m. Friday, Feb. 29, 2008, in his home. He had been in failing health for the past five months and critically ill for the past month. BLOOM, SR., 87, of 14352 Charmian Road, Waynesboro, a retired chief warrant officer, died at 10:50 p.m. Friday, Feb. 29, 2008, in his home. He had been in failing health for the past five months and critically ill for the past month. Born May 14, 1920, in Monterey, he was the son of the late John Franklin and Margaret Grace (Woodring) Bloom. He lived most of his life in the home in which he was born. Mr. Bloom graduated from the former Washington Township High School, Waynesboro, in 1939. He also attended the University of Maryland. He and his wife of more than 58 years, Anna (Beate) Bloom, were married Oct. 8, 1949, in Augsburg, Germany. Mr. Bloom served with the U. S. Army from 1942 to 1968. He retired as a chief warrant officer after 26 years of service. He served in Germany and Korea during World War II. He also served with the 76th Division, 70th Tank Battalion, 33rd Transportation Battalion and the 65th Engineer Battalion during the Korean and Vietnam wars. Mr. Bloom received more than 40 decorations during his service, including the Bronze Star with three oak leaf clusters. Following his discharge from the military, he worked at the former Sears Catalog Store, Waynesboro, from 1969 to 1980, and in the pro shop at Fort Ritchie, Cascade, from 1980 to 1990. Mr. Bloom was a member of Hawley Memorial Presbyterian Church, Blue Ridge Summit. He was a life member of William "Max" McLaughlin VFW Post 695, Waynesboro. He also was a member of Joe Stickell American Legion Post 15 and BPO Elks Lodge 731, both of Waynesboro, and the Military Officers Association of America. Mr. Bloom volunteered in the thrift shop at Waynesboro Day Care Center, Wayne Heights, for 10 years. Mr. Bloom enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, golfing and bowling. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, George F. Bloom, Jr. of Waynesboro and Clifton J. Bloom of Holland, Pa., four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Louise Carson of Eugene, Ore., Myrtle Morganthal, Rouzerville and Beverly Lake of Woodbridge, Va., three brothers, Richard Bloom of Monterey, Clarence Bloom of Boca Raton, Fla., and James Bloom of Arlington, Va., and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Ethel Alexander, Gladys Galloway and Alma Muth, and two brothers, John Bloom and Clifton Bloom. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Hawley Memorial Presbyterian Church, 14753 Charmian Road, Blue Ridge Summit, with the Rev. William H. Hammann officiating. Burial will be in Bethel Church Cemetery, Cascade, with military graveside services conducted by the honor guard of Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599 of Chambersburg. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services Tuesday in the church. The family requests the omission of flowers.
