He had been failing in health for the past nine months and seriously ill for the last week. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Jones Funeral Home with the Rev. Mr. Birney was born November 18, 1895 in Washington, a son of John G. and Estalena Stafford Birney. He married Ferne Fuhr January 28, 1920. He entered military service July 22, 1918 and served at Camp Pike, Arkansas and at Camp Dodge. He had served as vice commander of Leon Beatty American Legion Post at Washington. Survivors are his wife; two sons; George Jr. and Robert, both of Washington, three grandchildren; two brothers; Homer of Columbus Junction and Lott of Haskins and one sister, Mrs. LeRoy Krotz of Washington.
