Description	:	Washington Evening Journal, Tuesday, May 31, 1938 John Gordon Birney, 70 years old, died at midnight Sunday at his home, 515 South Avenue B, as the result of an illness that began in January. Funeral services were held at two o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the L. A. Jones funeral home, in charge of Dr. F. W. Eastwood of the Presbyterian church. Burial was in the Elm Grove cemetery. Mr. Birney was born in Washington county March 13, 1868, a son of Lott Birney and Sarah Ann Gordon Birney. He was married to Estalena Stafford at Washington March 18, 1891 . Surviving him are his wife and four children: George G. Birney of Washington, Lott M. Birney of Haskins, Mrs. Clara Krotz of Washington, Homer D. Birney of Washington, and three grandchildren, George G. Birney, Robert O. Birney and Norma Jean Krotz. He also has one brother, D. C. Birney of Haskins and seven sisters, Mrs. Margaret Bennett of Oberlin, Kansas. Mrs. Elizabeth Custer of Menlo, Kansas, Mrs. Junetta Custer and Mrs. Letta Stafford of Muscatine, Mrs. Lisa Embree, Mrs. Ellen Stafford and Mrs Cora Crumpacker of Washington. Mr. Birney was a farmer and all his life was spent in Washington county, with the exception of four years when he lived in Kansas.
