In 1828 he settled in the wilds of Raleigh Township, County of Kent, at what is now known as Charing Cross. His patronage at that time was a clear sky and a dense forest; his possessions, a good constitution, cheerful disposition, and fixed religious principles. These sustained him as he subdued the primeval forest, and cultivated the virgin soil, and made for his family a comfortable home. The Methodist missionaries of those early days preached the Gospel in his home, and over the class thus organized he was appointed leader, which position he honorably filled in the church during his long and useful life. He was an early subscriber to the Christian Guardian and took it constantly for forty years. Hopefulness was a marked characteristic, and fifty years ago he predicted there would be a market in Chatham, and the railway engine would pass through the peninsula before that generation passed away. These have long since been realized, and as we were bringing his mortal remains for burial out of the beautiful church he helped to create, the Atlantic and Pacific Express trains were passing at the station, bound for the east and west. The last public service he attended was the August quarterly meeting, and soon his mental and physical powers gave evidence of weakness, but during his illness he was sustained by an unfaltering trust in Christ, and on December 24, 1878, peacefully, passed away. A large concourse of friends and kindred attended the funeral, among the mourners his son-in-law, Rev. George Clark of Blythe Circuit. The writer gave an exposition of Chapter 12 of Ecclesiastes; Brother Joseph Clark a successful local preacher, who for forty years has fully known the departed, gave an earnest address in a truly Christian spirit; and, after prayer by Rev. E. McCallum, we laid his remains in the old cemetery, Middle Road, awaiting the resurrection of the Just. This in the consistancy of his life, and in his unswerving adherence to the principles of the church. Brother George Harvey has left a heritage to his surviving relations and friends of the inestimable value and furnished another evidence of the great verity of our divine religion."
