He died Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2012, at St. Anthony's Nursing Home in Carroll, Iowa. Burial will be in the Westside Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the United Church Westside Endowment Fund. George H. Coffin was born Jan. 26, 1925, at Clear Lake, Iowa, to William and Verna Coe Coffin. George graduated from Clear Lake Community High School in 1942. In 1943, he joined the U.S. Army serving in the European Theater during World War II. He was captured by the German Army in December 1944 during the "Battle of the Bulge" and remained a prisoner of war until April 1945. He married Esther Mae Clark June 2, 1945, at the Methodist Church in Plymouth, Iowa, and three children were born to this union. George first worked for Hathorne Motor Company in Mason City. In 1961, the family moved to Westside, Iowa. He joined Kratoska Insurance in Carroll which later became Mid-Iowa Insurance, working there until retiring in 1987. He was extremely active in his church and community. He served as commander of the Westside American Legion, was a member of DAV, and VFW and drove veterans to the VA Hospital in Omaha. He organized a Boy Scout troop in the Westside area, serving as scoutmaster for many years. George and Esther enjoyed ballroom dancing and traveling. He loved gardening and growing flowers, and was an avid do-it-yourselfer. George's faith was a constant part of his life, sustaining him through many difficult times. Surviors include three children, Ron and wife, Dixie, Rick and wife, Sue, and Becky and husband, Jeff; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Clifford and wife, Ruth; and two sisters-in-law, Jeanne and June. He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Esther; his parents; two brothers, William H., Jr., and Ralph E.; and grandson, Christopher.
