So in Norway Gisle’s name was Gisle Helliksen Langtjernseter. He was the fourth and last child born to Hellik Olsen Langtjernseter (Hellik O. Satter) and Maret Gisledatter Aslefet (Mary Satter). Gisle was born on October 1, 1865 on the farm Langtjernseter, near Skotselv, Flesberg Parish, Buskerud fylke, Numedal, Norway. He was baptized on Oct. 15, 1865, and his baptismal records are listed in the Flesberg parish records in Norway. He was named after his mother’s father Gisle. Gisle grew up on his parents’ beautiful farm Langtjernseter in Norway until he was three years old. In the spring of 1868, the family sold the farm and went to America. They left from Liverpool, England on the ship S.S. Nova Scotian and arrived in Quebec, Canada in May of 1868. By this time the family had dropped the farm name as part of their last name and was going by Olsen. The ship records show them listed as Hellik Olsen age 41 years, Marit Gislesdatter wife, 32 years, Ole child, 12 years, and Gisle as an infant. His brother Hellick stayed behind in Norway but joined them two years later. They went to Dane County, Wisconsin to live. They are found there in the 1870 census in the town Christianna, in Dane County, Wisconsin on August 12, 1870. Gisle’s family is living with a family, by the name of Andrew and Jane Lems. They are listed as Hellick Olson, 42 years old, working as a farm laborer, his mother Mary, 42 years old, was working as a domestic, and Gisle, 5 years old was living at home. His brothers Ole and Hellick are not living in the household with them. Gisle went west with his parents and brothers in 1874 on the wagon train to Boone County, Nebraska. They arrived in Old Town (which later became Newman Grove) Nebraska on July 4, 1874. His father soon located the land he wanted to homestead and filed a claim on August 1, 1874. His father’s homestead was located in Midland Township, Boone County, Nebraska on the N.W. ¼ of Section 32, Township 21 North, Range 5 West, 6th Principle Meridian consisting of 160 acres. Gisle (George) and his brothers helped his parents to improve the land by building two sod houses, one 12 X 16 feet and another 28 X 40 feet. They also built a straw stable, hog pens, and planted about 100 trees and had a well. They cultivated about 30 acres and raised oats, corn, potatoes, and other vegetables. His father receives the final patent for the land on October 10, 1882. Gisle (George) became a member of Immanuel Zion Lutheran Church – South Branch, in Shell Creek Township, Boone County, Nebraska on November 10, 1875 along with his parents. He was confirmed on June 6, 1880 and is listed in the church records as Jisle Helliksen Langtjernseter son of Hellik Langtjernseter and his birth date as Oct. 1, 1866. (It should be 1865) Gisle (George) remained a consistent member of Immanuel Zion Lutheran Church – South Branch and faithful believer his whole life. In Nebraska the families’ name were Americanized. The farm name Langtjernseter in Norway was shortened to Satter. From then on all the family members were known by the last name Satter. Gisle’s name was changed to George Satter. Geroge lived with his parents most of his life helping out on their homestead, doing farm labor. He never owned any land and never married. His parent’s homestead was sold a while after his father died in Dec. 1884. George and his mother then moved in with his brother Ole and his wife Jennie. George continued help out with the farm work on brother Ole’s homestead. Sometime before 1920 George moved in with a friend by the name of Carl Schlandbusch and worked for him on his farm. George passed away on June 23, 1924, in Boone County, Nebraska, at the age of 59. He was buried the next day on June 24, 1924 at Immanuel Zion Lutheran South Branch Cemetery, in Shell Creek Township, Boone County, Nebraska. The cemetery was beside the church up until March 2, 1979, when the church was hit by lightning and it completely burned down. Now the cemetery stands there alone and a new church was built down the road and down the hill. George does not have a tombstone, but is probably buried beside his parents or beside his brother Ole and his wife Jennie. If anyone has more information about his life please e-mail me.
