LAST CALL ANSWERED BY GEORGE HINDLEY Last Tuesday morning, shortly after one o'clock, at his home in Ferndale, George Hindley, one of Humboldt's best known men, answered the call of the death angel after an illness of about two weeks. He had been feeling considerably improved Monday and was thought to be on the road to recovery. About midnight, however, he was taken suddenly worse, and an hour later passed away. George Hindley was a native of Elgin county, Canada West, where he was born October 13, 1846. At the time of his death he was aged 67 years, 4 months and 24 days. In the year 1854 with his parents he came to California, the family settling in Weaverville, Trinity county. Here George Hindley grew to young manhood and shortly after he was twenty-one years of age he came to Humboldt county and settled in the Mattole valley. Here he made his home for many years, engaged in ranching and stock raising, until with his family he came to Ferndale some thirteen years ago to reside, shortly after his election as Supervisor of this district in 1900. Mr. Hindley served this district as Supervisor one term from 1885 to 1888. He then retired to his fine ranch at Upper Mattole unit again called by the people in 1900. He had since been re-elected at each election and had filled the office for more than thirteen years past. With his previous term he had been a member of the Board of Supervisors of this county more than seventeen years. On December 25, 1866, George Hindley was united in marriage to Miss Margaret Jane Holman at Weaerville, Trinity county, and soon afterwards they came to Humboldt, which has since been their home. To bless this union thirteen children were born, of whom nine survive their father, as follows: George L. Hindley of Hydesville; Mrs. Walter Hackett and Ernest Hindley of Ferndale; Mrs. Walter Reishus of Cottonwood, Minnesota; Mrs. George Lindley of Upper Mattole; Mrs. M. Waddington of Waddington; Miss Rebecca, Joseph and Henry Hindley, of Ferndale. Besides these there are left, too mourn, the widow, Mrs. Margaret Hindley, several grandchildren and other more distant relatives. The death of George Hindley has cast a gloom over all Humboldt county. He was known to old and young in every part of the county and was universally esteemed and respected. Of a sunny disposition, he attracted and held friends, and a chat with him was a sure cure for the blues. A testimony of his popularity is seen in the fact that he was elected Supervisor time after time as a Democrat, though the district was strongly Republican. As Supervisor, Mr. Hindley worked hard for the construction of the big concrete bridge over Eel river, and after it was built he was often referred to as "Father of the Bridge." That beautiful and substantial structure will long stand as a monument to his memory. Faithful to his trust to the last, Mr. Hindley spent the last afternoon of his life examining the claims from his district and getting them in readiness for presentation at the meeting of the Board on Tuesday, though he might justly have excused himself from this duty, by reason of his illness. Fraternally Mr. Hindley was a member of the Masons, Odd Fellows, Knights of Pythias, Elks and several other orders. These societies will attend the funeral services in a body. Arrangements for the funeral have not been completed, awaiting the arrival of a daughter, Mrs. Walter Reishus, for the East. If that lady arrives tomorrow as has been expected, the funeral will be held Sunday. Should Mrs. Reishus not be able to make connections with the steamer leaving San Francisco today she will not be able to reach Ferndale before Monday, in which event the funeral will probably be held Tuesday. The services will be from the family residence, Rev. A. W. Bell officiating, and the Masons will have charge of the services at the grave.
