Burial was in Bloomfield township cemetery at Castalia. George Hiram Monroe, son of Lewis and Chirstena Monroe, was born on a farm near Castalia, September 27, 1907 and spent his boyhood on this farm. He passed away Monday morning, January 15 at the age of 43 years. He attended the Castalia public school and graduated from Postville high school. For a short time after his graduation he worked on farms in the Castalia community. He later started to work for the Rock Island Lines at West Union and worked there for several years. In 1946 he transferred to Cedar Rapids and worked from time to time in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Decorah and Waterloo where he was employed at the time of his death as an engine watchman. His death was caused by a heart attack. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles at Cedar Rapids, and the Royal Order of Moose, in the same city. He was preceded in death by his father, Lewis Monroe in 1940 and a brother, Ambrose, 23 years ago. He leaves to cherish his memory his mother, two brothers, Earl Monroe, Albert Lea, Minnesota; and Charles Monroe, Waterloo; six sisters, Goldie, Mrs Guy Holtzman, Fayette; Mrs. Iva Michel, West Union; Abbie, Mrs. Charles DeSotel, Monona; Della, Mrs Raymond Steffans, Elgin; Florence, Mrs Gerald Gutcher, Clermont; Irene, Mrs Bernard Nathem, Postville; serveral nieces and nephews **Note--Although his Obit states Burial in Bloomfield Township Cemetery at Castalia; he was buried in the Pleasant View Cemetery with the rest of his siblings and parents.
