REBIK DIED IN FRANCE OF INFLUENZA Was Son of Mr. and Mrs. John Rebik of Otter Creek—Enlisted March 12, 1917 The home of Mr. and Mrs. John Rebik was greatly saddened when they received a communication telling of the death of their son, George John, in France on November 13 of influenza. A letter received from the Chaplain of Ills regiment told of his sickness and death, and of the care and excellent treatment he received while sick. The letter also told of a custom in France where those who have lost a relative in the war adopt the grave of an American soldier and keep it covered with flowers. This had been done with Rebik’s grave. Private George Rebik was born in Otter Creek township M arch 10, 1898, where he attended the public schools. George had a word of cheer for everybody. Everybody knew him by his laughs and smiles. He enlisted March 12, 1917 in the coast artillery, being stationed at Pensacola, Florida. On September 7, 1917 he was sent overseas for service in France. The last letter written to his parents told that he was in excellent health. Later a letter was received from a friend stating that he was ill, but not seriously, then came the message telling of his death. His death is a severe blow to his parents and relatives.
