He married Sarah Murphy on November 27, 1861 in Southbury Township, New Haven, CT. In 1863 the family moved to Balder Township, Linn County, Iowa. George enlisted in the Civil War as a private on September 30, 1864 and mustered out in June of 1865. From his son, Ernie Perry "Father came home, had been sunstroke in the army, his feet were somewhat crippled from marching with shoes that did not fit well." The family moved to Wheeler Township, Sac County, Iowa in 1875. From Ernie Perry "A tornado took our house away in 1877. My parents had bought a white cow and after that storm she was black with mud and dirt. They had quite a number of hogs and they were crippled with broken legs and backs and had to be killed. The chickens had lost much of their feathers and some killed. The family had all gotten in a cave at a neighbors. Mother cried when she saw the house was gone. Father said, 'I have two hands and can make another.' I have been told that the neighbors got together and built a 24 foot by 16 foot house and we made out with it." Their daughter Mary said that relatives in Connecticut sent a barrel of clothes for the family. George lived on that farm until his sudden death in 1888. He had trouble with his wife last fall, resulting in a separation, since which time he had lived on his farm with no companion but his son, a lad of 12 years. The boy heard the report of a pistol about six o'clock, and on going into his father's room found the latter lying dead on the floor. The unfortunate man left a letter stating that he was tired of life. He had been despondent for several months, and it is supposed that his domestic troubles prompted him to the rash act. Mr. Perry was abut 50 years old.
