The 1935 South Dakota State Census records George living in Bon Homme County, South Dakota. He was 25 years old, and single. George Kostal contracted pulmonary tuberculosis, and was hospitalized. The US Census in 1940 listed George Kostal as residing in Utica Township at the State Hospital. George Kostal's Parents, Grandparents, and Siblings: Frank Anton Kostal was born on March 30th, 1862 in Doini Rimov, Bohemia/Czechoslovakia. He was the son of Vaclav "James" Kostal ( 1841-1922) and Terezie Kouba Kostal (1840-1886). Together, Vaclav, Terezi and their children emigrated from Bohemia and arrived in America. We believe they came to the United States through New York. Frank married Rosie Annie Petrik Kostal on November 20th, 1888 at the Catholic Church in Tabor, South Dakota. She was the daughter of famous Czech Polka musician and composer, Matt Petrik, and his wife who was Marie Kase Petrik. To the union of Frank Anton Kostal and Rosie Annie (Petrik) Kostal, several children were born. Three of their children were lost in infancy or early childhood: Mary Kostal (born in 1890 and lost at the age of three years), James Kostal (born in 1899 or 1900), and Joseph Kostal (born 1899 or 1900 and died in 1901 at the age of two years). Four children survived to adulthood: Anna Theresa (Kostal) Kozel, Elizabeth M. "Elsie" Kostal, Frank Xavier Kostal (whose middle name is often shown as a "V"), and George Joseph Kostal (who was lost to pulmonary tuberculosis).
