According to one history, his father Frank Kožišek "came to Wisconsin in the early sixties and served two years in the civil War, where he changed his name to Fleming. A soldier that name was killed in action, and as the name Kožišek was hard to pronounce, the others gave him the dead man's name, which he and his children used. ''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''' Butler County Press (David City, Nebr.), August 11, 1938, p. 1, col. 6 PASSED AWAY AUGUST 6 DEATH OF GEORGE KOZISEK He Had Been a Resident of Bruno Locality 65 Years Bruno, Aug. 9 - George Kozisek, long-time resident of Bruno locality, passed away at the farm home of his youngest son, James F. Kozisek, with whom he made his home, at 3:30 o'clock Saturday morning, Aug. 6, following illness of six months. He was aged 74 years, 8 months and 24 days. Funeral services were held at 9 o'clock Monday morning from the home to St. Anthony's Catholic church, with Rev. Father Kopecky celebrating the requiem mass at 9:30 o'clock and conducting the burial rites. Interment was in St. Anthony's cemetery beside the grave of his wife, who passed away December 20, 1932. The pallbearers were grandsons of the deceased, Louis Samek, James Samek, Alfred Kozisek, Alex Kozisek, Richard Kozisek and Wilfred Kozisek. Many relatives and friends were present at the funeral, including a large number from David City, Bellwood, Surprise, Ulysses, Bee, Dwight and Prague. Among those in attendance from a distance were Wencil Yindrick, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Yindrick and Miss Alma Yindrick of Yuba, Wis., James Kozisek and son and Adolf Soukup of O'Neill and John Kozisek of Schuyler. George Kozisek was born at Dartford, Wis., November 12, 1863, a son of Frank and Anna Kozisek. In 1873, the Kozisek family moved to Butler county, Nebraska, the father making three trips here by wagon from Wisconsin that year to take out a homestead, break 80 acres of prairie sod, and prepare a home for his family. Mrs. Anna Yindrick and brother, Frank, accompanied their father on his first trip and remained here while the move was being accomplished. George Kozisek and Josephine Yindrick were united in marriage at Appleton November 7, 1884, and from that time until death they resided on the same farm northwest of Bruno. To them were born nine children, seven sons and two daughters, all of whom survive and were present at the funeral. They are Frank of Utica, Joseph J. of Brainard, Louis J., Charles E. and James F. of Bruno, Fred of David City, William of Bellwood, Mrs. Mary Samek of Dwight and Agnes, Mrs. Jerry Voboril of Linwood. There are 22 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Other surviving relatives are four brothers, Karel of Abie, Edward of Lusk, Wyo., James of O'Neill and William of Bruno, and three sisters, Mrs. Anna Yindrick of Bruno and Mrs. Tina Vondra and Miss Mary Kozisek of Casper, Wyo. Mr. Kozisek was a man of upright character, honest, trustworthy and just. He was a devout Catholic, a member of the Holy Name society, a man who lived and died in peace with God and man. He suffered patiently and was ever thoughtful of others during his long illness. As a pioneer citizen, he did his full share in building up the community in which he lived, and was at one time county supervisor of Dist.
