The shocking news reached this city last Friday morning that George Lamb had been killed in the yards at Minnesota transfer, the evening before. Lamb's train, No. 409 and a west bound passenger on the C.B. and Q. road, which crossed the G.N. there, were ready to leave at the about the same time. It was Lamb's duty to line up the switches, and after doing this he gave the "high ball"* to the passenger. The train started and Lamb then attempted to cross over to his own train, but he stumbled and fell, his head striking on a bolt. It is thought that this blow rendered him unconscious, as he know the passenger was approaching, and it would have been an easy matter for a man as active and quick on his feet as he was, to have gotten out of the way. The fireman on the passenger noticed Lamb started to cross the track, and then, loss sight of him, asked the engineer if he had seen anything of the brakeman. The latter replied that he had not. The train was then stopped and an investigation was made. The body was found in a terribly mutilated condition, two cars and the engine having run over it. The body was taken to an undertaking establishment, and short funeral services were held from there at one o'clock Sunday afternoon. The body was shipped to Tripoli, Iowa, where his mother lives, for interment. George had been running between this city and St. Paul for the last three years, and was one of the most popular fellows on the road. Always in good humor, always with a good word for his fellow men, he was the life of any gathering or bunch that he was in. For the last three seasons he played with the local base ball team. He was married about thirty-three years and made his home in St. Paul. [*high ball: a whistle that blew when the train was pulling out of the station. Raising a ball at the side of the tracks was an early way of signaling the train to go ahead. Mrs. Lamb and son went to St. Paul that night, returning here on Monday. Obituary-Geo. Lamb was born in Tripoli June 28, 1882, and lived here until early manhood. He went west,joining the United States army and serving four years at San Francisco. Later he became a brakeman at the Great northern and was married on May 7, 1910 to Miss Maria [?] Hieman. Their married life of over five years was spent in St.Paul. He leaves to mourn him his widow, his mother, Mrs. Louisa Lamb; his sisters, Mrs. Murray of LaPorte City, Mrs. Loshman of Waterloo, Mrs. Fiester of St. Paul; brothers, Frank of Tripoli, E.A. of Independence, Bert of Staples,Minn, and Marvin of Texas. The father and one brother preceded him in death. George Lamb came to his death while at work. Funeral services were held in St.Paul on Sunday and from his mother’s home in Tripoli on Monday. Rev.
