Survivors include his wife, Mary Heatherly Ridenour, Caryville; daughter, Crea Ridenour, Cali, Columbia; brother, Joseph L. Ridenour, Cattsworth, Ga.; sisters, Carrie, Maude and Mayme Ridenour, Jacksboro, Mrs. Bill Darty, Akron, Ohio; nephews and nieces. Dr. Ridenour was born December 27, 1889 at Forkvale, between the Powell and Clinch rivers, and moved with his parents in early childhood to Sugar Hollow, a farming community now under the waters of Norris Lake. He first taught school as a helper at the age of 15, and continued to teach while attending Carson-Newman College, graduating with a B. A. in 1914, and M. A. in 1915. He was a member of the Tennessee National Guard for nine years; the unit incorporated into the regular Army as the Fourth Tennesse Infantry during the First World War. While still a boy, Dr. Ridenour was converted and baptized into the fellowship of Sugar Hollow Baptist Church. He was licensed to preach, later ordained, and held pastorates in Tennessee and Kentucky. He graduated from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, KY, earning the degrees of Th.M. in 1923, Th.D. in 1927, and Ph.D. in 1932. In his thesis he studied social conditions in the coal mining regions of Kentucky and the History of Salem Association of Baptists in Kentucky. In 1932 he returned to Campbell County. For 30 years, he and his wife were active in Baptist work, holding Bible schools, young people's camps, developing Sunday School and church work in many communities. During the construction of Norris Dam, he did religious work in CCC camps, and voluntarily worked in the relocation of churches and in the grave removals program, choosing the site of Bakers Forge Memorial Cemetery. During World War II he again began to teach in the public schools of Campbell County, continuing to preach and teach until retirement. He earned an M.A. in education from the University of Tennessee in 1950. His published books include "Early Times In Meade County, Kentucky", "The Land Of The Lake", and "A Baptist Primer". A column, "Campbell County Sketches" was published by the LaFollette Press for several years. Dr. Ridenour was interested in the history of pioneer times in Kentucky and Tennessee, in flower growing and in the wildflowers of the Tennessee Cumberlands. At the time of his death, Dr. Ridenour was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, LaFollette, Tenn. Funeral services were conducted by the church on Sunday, December 15 at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Bill Waddell and the Rev. Lee Kidwell, with burial in Bakers Forge Memorial Cemetery. Cross Funeral Home, LaFollette, was in charge of arrangements.
