For more than thirty years Mr. Smith was closely identified with the life of this neighborhood. Coming here from Illinois in an early day, he knew something of the hardships of life on the frontier. His health has been poor tor a number of years, but no one but his physician seems to have realized what a slight tenure he held on life, until the last week. Just a few weeks ago he removed to Iola, and many of the old neighbors here did not hear of his sickness until they learned of his demise. The large concourse of friends and old neighbors that met the mourners at Pleasant Valley church Saturday to pay the last tribute of respect to the departed, spoke more plainly than words the feeling of regard for the deceased and of sympathy for the bereaved family. Rev. Stranahan of LaHarpe officiated and the remains were interred in Pleasant Valley Cemetery. - When Mr. Smith who died in Iola Thursday, married Mrs Smith they had between them sixteen children from former marriages. In addition to these there were born to them three children, and the parents raised the nineteen children to manhood and womanhood without any of them leaving the family circle. It is very remarkable record and speaks volumes for the excellent heart of both the parents. The Iola Register. (Iola, Kan.)
