He had not been in good health for several years. George was born on February 17, 1927, in Harrisonburg, and was the son of the late John Hisey and Mabel Logan Humes, George lived all of his life in the Harrisonburg area. Mr. Humes served in the U. S. Navy during World War II and re-entered the Navy during the Korean Conflict. He received the WWII Victory Metal, Navy Occupation Service Metal (E), and Good Conduct Metal. George worked from Glen Fair Price Store and McCroy?s Store for 1947 until he retired in 1982. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Rion-Bowman VFW Post No. 632; American Legion Post No. 188; Disabled American Veterans Post No. 24; Timberville Moose, Amvets, and was a life member of Hose Co. No. 4. On January 22, 1949, George married, Norma Jean Manning who preceded him in death on January 27, 1964. He is survived by a son, Eddie Humes and wife, Janet, three grandchildren, Shawn, Cristal, and Andrea, two great-grandchildren, a nephew, John Bill Humes of Bridgewater, two nieces, Sally Garges and Sheila Boyce of N. C., and two sister in-laws. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph H. Humes and J. W. ?Bill? Humes. A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM at Foley Hall, located at VFW Post 632 on Waterman Drive in Harrisonburg, on Saturday, September 8, 2007, with the Rev. Clarence Moyers officiating. Burial will follow at Woodbine Cemetery. Mr. Humes will be cremated at Lindsey Cremation Chapel. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the American Legion, Rion Bowman VFW Post 632, and Fire Co. #4. Members of the family will receive friends, 7 to 8:30 PM, Friday evening, September 7, at Lindsey Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.
