Read More	John William "Bill" Humes Sr., 69, a resident of 1741 West Market Street in Harrisonburg, died at 12:39 Sunday morning, April 3, 1994, at the Rockingham Memorial Hospital. He had not enjoyed good health for the past several years and became seriously ill in December 1993. A son of the late John Hisey and Mabel Logan Humes, he was born on November 15, 1924, in Harrisonburg where he lived all of his life. He was educated in Harrisonburg City Schools and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He later went to work for the City of Harrisonburg as a fireman in the fire department where he became very involved with the community. He became a state certified fire instructor and spent many hours teaching both career and volunteer fire fighters across the state. In 1968, he was promoted to City Fire Chief, where he made a significant impact to public safety both locally and statewide. Chief Humes served 36 years in the fire service and was highly regarded by his peers. Chief Humes was a Charter member of the Harrisonburg Volunteer Rescue Squad which he was active for 27 years. He was a member of Harrisonburg Fire Company No. 1 as well as honorary member of the McGaheysville and Shenandoah Fire Departments. He was also past president of the State Fire Chiefs Association. Mr. Humes was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon and an usher; and was also a member of the Court Square Senteniel Society of the Church. He belonged to the American Legion Post No. 27 and Rion-Bowman V.F.W. Post No. 632. On May 27, 1950, he married the former Alice Bocock Humes, who survives. Also surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, John William "John Bill" Humes Jr. and Jan Harvey Humes of Bridgewater; one grandson, John Robert Humes; one brother, George Logan Humes of Harrisonburg; one sister-in-law, Dorothy Humes of North Carolina; two nieces of North Carolina; and a number of great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Ralph H. Humes of North Carolina. Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 11 O'clock from the First Presbyterian Church with Dr. John F. Sloop officiating. Burial will follow in the Woodbine Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Harrisonburg City Fire Dept.; Harrisonburg Rescue Squad, American Legion, and Rion-Bowman V.F.W. The members of the family will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:30 Tuesday evening at the Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home or anytime at his late residence.
