Forty years ago a couple of the town's merchants invited George Beaudoin to come over from Seattle and live in Brewster for a different reason; they invited him because he could hit a baseball. "Bodie" as he is known by the many friends he's made in Brewster, could connect hard enough and often enough at the plate that his former teammate and fellow Brewsterite Ernie Linder, says that "Bodie was the best player in the league." Period. And that was no small feat. In the middle of the depression, with many of the nations' people out of work, you had to be pretty good to be offered a joy and a place to live because of the way you played baseball. And in the semi pro league that stretched from Lake Chelan to Kamploops, BC., well, that was a lot of players to do better than. Bodie played center field over a thirteen year stretch for the Brewster team, except for the war years when he was on the coast, and in those thirteen years Brewster won the pennant five times. Then in 1950, his baseball career was cut short when he broke his ankle sliding into second. With his playing days over, Beaudoin began working for various merchants around town, finally settling down to work with Forrest Wilson, taking care of the city. Then when Wilson retired, Bodie inherited the job. Although he couldn't play semi-pro any longer, Bodie still kept his hand in by umpiring games for the high schoolers. And though his first love is baseball, he didn't stop there. He also refereed basketball and football games for many years in the area. From hitting home runs to umpiring to unclogging culverts, Goerge Beaudoin has served the residents of Brewster for more than the twenty-one years he served the city. His retirement will be a much-deserved rest.
