Merrill, one of Hamilton county's pioneer residents, passed away at the family home on West Second street Tuesday [July 23, 1912] afternoon at about 4:45. Mr. Merrill was one of the early settler, who came to this county when its future was uncertain and unsettled. For the past two years Mr. Merrill had been ailing, but not until a few days ago was his condition serious enough to force him to his bed. Until a couple of days ago it was thought that he would recover and his death came as a great shock to his family and friends. George Merrill was born in Washington, county, New York, August 7, 1842. His father died in 1850 and in 1854 the mother moved with the family to Kendall county, Illinois, later coming to Iowa. Mr. Merrill joined the union army in 1861, being a member of company E, 36th Illinois Infantry. He was a good soldier and left the service with a creditable record. He participated in the battle of Perryville and Stone river, being wounded in the latter. In 1865, after being mustered out of the service, he came to Iowa, locating in Fremont township, this county, where he resided many years. He was a successful farmer and a few years ago removed to this city to pass the evening of life in quiet and rest. Deceased was a man of more than ordinary intelligence, was well informed upon public questions and was of firm convictions. He enjoyed the good will and respect of all who knew him. The passing away of Mr. Merrill leaves beside his wife, three children, Miss Ruth Merrill, who lives at home; Phillip Merrill, who for the past year or so has been traveling through the west, and Daniel Merrill, who resides at the family home. Phillip Merrill will arrive in the city Thursday morning. (Webster City Tribune, Webster City, IA, July 26, 1912) George Merrill, section 25, Fremont Township, was born in Washington County, New York, August 7, 1842, a son of John and Jane (Hopkins) Merrill, his father a native of Hebron, Hartford County, Connecticut, and his mother of Sandgate, Bennington County, Vermont. His father died in 1850 and in 1854 his mother moved with her family to Kendall County, Illinois, later coming to Iowa, and died in Estherville in April, 1888. George Merrill was reared a farmer, but was given good educational advantages, attending school in his native county and in Yorkville, Illinois. After the breaking out of the war of the Rebellion in August, 1861, he enlisted in the defense of his country and was assigned to Company E, Thirty-Sixth Illinois Infantry, which became a part of the Army of the Cumberland. He participated in the battle of Perryville and Stone River, where he was wounded December 31, 1862, a musket ball entering his body between the sixth and seventh left ribs, and he still carries the rebel lead in his body. He was also captured and was held a prisoner for four days, when he was retaken by the Union forces. He was known to have been wounded and was reported among the dead. He was taken to the hospital at Nashville, where he remained three months under the care of a cousin, Dr. Hopkins, now a prominent physician of Kendall County. He was discharged from the service on account of disability and returned home, where he remained until 1865, when he came to Iowa and located in Fremont Township, Hamilton County, where he has since lived. He entered 160 acres of wild land, which he has converted into a fine farm, and has added to it until he now owns 400 acres. His farm in located four miles northwest of Webster City in one of the pleasantest portions of Hamilton County. Mr. Merrill was married in December, 1866, to Frances Helen Johnson, a native of Vermont, daughter of Daniel and Avis (Gray) Johnson, early settlers of Kendall County, Illinois. Mr. and Mrs. Merrill have three children – Daniel, Ruth and Phillip. In politics Mr. Merrill casts his suffrage independent of party ties. He has always taken an active interest in public affairs and has served as justice of the peace, township trustee, and as secretary of the school board.
