MESSER IN FATAL COLLAPSE Mr. George Messer, station master, who died in St. Stephen's Hospital at 10.30 a.m. yesterday after having collapsed at the Railway Station at 9 a.m., was born on May 25, 1885, at Pialba. He was one of 11 children and his death marks the first break in the family. The late Mr. Messer's aged mother lives at Kawungun. Mr. Messer joined the railway as a lad porter at Maryborough in March, 1904. Shortly afterwards he was transferred to Pialba. From there he was transferred to Maryborough, where he served until August, 1906, when he was placed as porter-in-charge at Doolbi. From Doolbi the late Mr. Messer returned to Maryborough, and in September, 1907, he was porter -in -charge at Kowbi during the sugar season. In the same month he was appointed a night officer, and later he served as a relieving night officer at Toowoomba. In August, 1931, he was appointed assistant station master at Warwick, and in October, 1912, he became station master at Tara. In June. 1914, the late Mr. Messer became station master at MacAlister (fourth class). In September, 1915, he was placed as station master at Mundubbera, and in October 1918, he was station master at Quilpie, from where, in August, 1919, he went as station master at Inglewood. From there he went to Blackall in July, 1927 (third class) and in April, 1936, he was transferred to Longreach (second class). In October, 1938. Mr. Messer went to Hughenden (first class) and in August, 1939, he became station master at Cairns (first class). In January, 1940,the late Mr. Messer came back to his home town, Maryborough, and he held the position of station master here until his death yesterday. The late Mr. Messer's principal hobbies, were gardening and fishing. His people were engaged in farming. Deceased was regarded as a widely-experienced railway officer, and his courteous manner and attention to its requirements made him a popular man with the travelling public. The late Mr. Messer, who leaves a grown-up family of two sons and two daughters — Cyril, on the staff of the New Zealand Loan at Hughenden, Reginald, an officer in the National Bank of Queensland, Brisbane. Mrs. Ron Watt, of Bundaberg, and Mrs. Alec Barker, of Samarai, was pre deceased by his second wife about a year ago. The Railway Department will be represented at the funeral to-day by the District Superintendent, Mr. Skyring, the Maintenance Engineer. Mr. H. Haussmann, and the Locomotive Engineer Mr H. Jones."
