Kopriva, 20 years old, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Kopriva, three and one-half miles southeast of Traer, died at 11 p.m. Tuesday in the St. Francis hospital at Waterloo. The young man was a victim of sleeping sickness, a rare disease of which no other case has been reported here in years. He picked corn all day Monday although he did not appear in quite his usual health. Early Tuesday morning he awoke and complained of a severe headache. A physician was soon called and the latter immediately summoned another from Waterloo for consultation. The patients condition became alarming and he was rushed to the hospital about 2:30 p.m. He lived less than nine hours thereafter. The funeral service was held at 10 a.m. yesterday in St. Vaclav church, west of Clutier, and was conducted by the Rev. Father T. A. Vopatek. Burial was in the St. Vaclav cemetery. The decedent was born July 28, 1909, and spent his entire life in the Traer community. After his graduation from the eighth grade of the Stormy Point school, three miles south of town, he assisted his father on the home farm nearby. He leaves three brothers and two sisters, as follows: Louis Kopriva, near Dysart; Joseph Jr. and William, at home; Bertha, wife of Tom Valenta, near Voorhies, and Anna, at home. One sister, Mary, died in infancy about twenty-eight years ago. Sleeping sickness, or inflammation of the brain, of which the young man died, is a contagious and a very dangerous disease. Because of the fact, however, that comparatively few people are susceptible to its germ, no epidemic here is feared. [Traer Star-Clipper, 1 November 1929]
