George Blackman, son of the late Henry and Adeline Carey Blackman, was born December 16, 1877 in Iowa and lived most of his life in this state. He spent his boyhood in the Asbury neighborhood, attending school and church there where he was baptized and received as a member. George loved nature and enjoyed the world of growing things. He was a farmer until he started working in the Mt. Arbor Nursery at Shenandoah where he was employed for 27 years. In 1914 he was united in marriage to Clara Pierce and to this union one daughter, Dorothy, was born. Mrs. Blackman died in 1936. On March 20, 1941, Mr. Blackman married Effie Weak. They made their home in Shenandoah until he retired and they moved to Red Oak in November 1958. Friends and neighbors enjoyed visiting the Blackmans in their home and the congeniality of their hosts. Mr. Blackman was one of nine children, a sister and three brothers preceding him in death. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. George Garnett, Barstow, California, six step children and their families,, two brothers, Walter of Glenwood and Dave of Council Bluffs, two sisters, MRs.
