He had been in ill health for more than a year. The son of Oth and Sophia Dowden, he was born in Pleasantville December 2, 1878, but had been a resident of Ottumwa for the past 45 years. He operated a grocery business on Madison avenue for 20 years, retiring about a year ago because of his health. He formerly had been affiliated with the waiter's union. He married Grace Wilford September 24, 1900, who survives him. Other survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Janet Hallberg, Ottumwa; a grandson, Budd Jaye Hallberg, Ottumwa, and four brothers, William Dowden, Spirit Lake, Thomas Dowden, Orlando, Fla., Charles Dowden, Sac City, and Sam Dowden, Prova, Utah. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Johnson funeral chapel, conducted by the Rev. C.R. Reed of the Willard Street Methodist church. Burial will be in Shaul cemetery. Pallbearers will be W.E. Armstrong, Albert H. Swanson, Horace P. Williams, Fred Moore, Harlan M. Reece and Oscar Nelson.
