Description	:	George P. Savchenko, 88, passed on to be with his Savior on October 24, 2001 after a lengthy illness. He was born on May 8, 1913 to Ukrainian immigrants, Peter and Mary Savchenko. His birthplace was in a sod house on their homestead located eight miles north of Makoti, North Dakota. George graduated from Makoti High School in 1933. He received honors for his trumpet playing. He was born on May 8, 1913 to Ukrainian immigrants, Peter and Mary Savchenko. His birthplace was in a sod house on their homestead located eight miles north of Makoti, North Dakota. George graduated from Makoti High School in 1933. He received honors for his trumpet playing. His interest in musical instruments led him to a lifetime involvement in music and teaching music. On September 12, 1935 George married Olga Vik in Big Timber. Three children were born to this union, LaVern, Ruth and Paul. He and his wife served as pastors for several years in churches in the West and Southwest. Then his family moved to Palmer, Alaska for four years to establish a mission church. Upon their return to the lower 48 states, he attended Lee College in Cleveland, Tennessee. He then studied Russian at Dartmouth College. He received his B.S. and Masters degrees from Montana State University in Bozeman. He became an educator in high schools and taught industrial arts and was a bandmaster in Columbus, Fairfield, Idaho, Vida, Oregon and near Lemmon, South Dakota. His son, LaVern, and his wife, Olga, preceded George in death. In 1980 George married Ruth Pettyjohn of Cleveland, Tennessee. They moved to Anacortes, Washington, where they made their home. He is survived by his wife, Ruth; a son, Paul of Anacortes, Washington; a daughter, Ruth and son-in-law, Bob Steger of Pampa, Texas; four grandchildren; a great granddaughter; two brothers, Clarence and Vance of Mesa, Arizona; three sisters, Elsie Sebens of Spokane, Washington, Lillian Peterson of Bismarck, North Dakota and Elma HIll of Atlanta, Georgia; three step-daughters, Carol Pettyjohn and Gaye Smith of Atlanta, Georgia and Myrna Hopkins of Cleveland, Tennessee; three step-grandchildren; and two step-great grandchildren. Following cremation, a memorial is planned for next summer in Big Timber.
