He was born January 7, 1937 in Ottumwa to James and Myrtle Hammersley Griffiths. He married Anna Louise White on October 20, 1956 and she preceded him in death on July 15, 2008. Surviving are five sons, Mike (Tish) Griffiths, Jeff (Angie) Griffiths, Kevin (Robyn) Griffiths, all of Ottumwa, James (Jeri) Griffiths of Jacksonville, FL and Douglas (Melanie) Griffiths of Bloomfield; two daughters, Sherrie (Curtis) Heemsbergen of Floris and Debora (Dan) Larkin of Ottumwa; 14 grandchildren, Kristen (Brad) Sertterh, Ryan (Hayley) Heemsbergen, Jessica (Aaron) Breon, Dustin (Janell), Constance, Chelsea, Marissa, Alec, Josh, Damon and Seth Griffiths, Andrea (Kyle) Rysdam, Daniel and Annie Larkin; 11 great grandchildren, Hunter and Autumn Sertterh, Kaison, Kale, and Camdyn Heemsbergen, Elias Breon, Radley, Raylynn and Ryley Rysdam, Ellie Griffiths, Jaelin Frye and one expecting; a sister, Barbara Freed of Ottumwa. He was preceded in death by four brothers, James Jr., Jerry, Richard and Dave Griffiths, a half-brother, Bill Griffiths and a sister, June Cain. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Reece Funeral Home with Chaplain Doug McAntire officiating. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery. Visitation will begin after 11 a.m. Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home with the family present one hour prior to the service on Thursday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion or Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars
