The car, drive by Winfred Morrow, Ft. Madison, coming north on highway 63, failed to make a turn and turned over several times, according to Deputy Sheriff C.E. Elliott. Mrs. Berniece Jones, 24, who lives south of Ottumwa, was rushed to the Ottumwa hospital, but pronounced dead on arrival. Morrow was treated and released at the hospital. Ralph White, 19, also a passenger, was hospitalized overnight, and released Sunday morning. Elliott said the accident occurred shortly before 11 p.m., at a curve five miles south of town. The trio had been at a dance near Belknap. Elliott said he was told one of the musicians at the dance was offered a drink from a jug thought to contain wine, but found instead to have gasoline in it. He took several swallows. While the three were rushing for a doctor, others applied emetics and the musician recovered after short illness from the gasoline drinking. Mrs. Jones was the wife of Merle D. Jones of Bloomfield, route 10, and was the mother of two daughters. She was born May 3, 1924, in Ottumwa, and had lived in this community all her life. Surviving in addition to her husband and two babies are her mother, Mrs. Myrtle Griffiths, Ottumwa route five, her father William Skinner, Ottumwa, two brothers, Edward Skinner of Bloomfield route 2 and William Griffith, Ottumwa route five, and a sister Mrs. Larry Davis of Belknap. Funeral services for Mrs. Jones will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Johnson funeral chapel, conducted by the Rev. W.B. Friend of the Pentecostal church. Burial will be in Shaul cemetery.
