Description	:	George P. Washburn, 90, DeWitt, Iowa, formerly of Calamus, Iowa, died early Friday morning, January 26, 2007 at Ridgecrest Village, Davenport, Iowa. Visitation will be at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, from 2 until 6 p.m. Sunday, January 28, 2007. Service of Christian Burial 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 29, 2007 in the Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Sarah Kretzmann officiating. Interment Rose Hill Cemetery, Calamus. Pallbearers will be Brian Elias, Troy Stuedemann, Blake Elias, Chad Melody, Bill Looney and Duane Petersen. Magnus M. Peterson American Legion Post #466, Calamus, will conduct military rites. George Paul Washburn was born in Giard, Iowa, September 21, 1916 to George and Mary (Torkelson) Washburn. He attended school in Clermont, Iowa. George served in the U.S. Coast Guard and was a veteran of World War II. While in the service he met and married Ida J. Quaal February 20, 1943. She passed away November 17, 2005 after 62 wonderful years together. George was a butter maker, working in creameries throughout Iowa. Later, he was the gas and fuel truck driver for Farmer's Co-op in Calamus. He was affectionately named the "Tootsie Roll Man" by all the children on his route, as he always gave the children a handful of Tootsie Tolls. George also sold Mason Shoes for years. He and his wife, Ida, moved to DeWitt in 1982. George was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Calamus, New Hope Support Group of DeWitt, and the American Legion of Calamus, where he received his "60 year membership award". George loved playing cards and checkers and spending time with his family. Survivors are two daughters, Mary Ann (Robert) Stuedemann, Clinton, Iowa, and Nancy (Allan) Elias, Davenport; four grandchildren, Brian (Wanda) Elias, Calamus, Lisa Keller, Davenport, Troy (Nancy) Stuedemann, Clinton, and Darcie (Chad) Melody, LeClaire, Iowa; six great-grandchildren, Savannah and Blake Elias, Cole and Abby Stuedemann and Collin and Paige Melody; nieces and nephews. Preceding George in death in addition to his wife, Ida, were a sister, Ella Wells and two great-granddaughters. (Source: Schultz Funeral Home)
