There has been a private family service and there will be no visitation. His body was donated to medical science. Arrangements are being handled by the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Zion Lutheran Church or the Muscatine Care Center. Mr. Apland was born on May 15, 1911, in Story City, the son of Peter and Ida Hovland Apland. The family later moved to a farm near Huxley. George graduated from Huxley High School and later from Iowa State University in 1938, with majors in agronomy and horticulture. He participated in Cossacks, earning five stripes. During a break in 1935 to 1936, George was in officer's training at Fort Riley, Kansas. After graduation, he did landscaping in Spencer. He then worked for Farm Security as county administrator. George married Marjorie Alice Hunting on Feb. 6, 1942. In 1943, he became a state administrator for Farm Security. Soon after, he was asked to be a technician for the new program of Soil Conservation being organized in Muscatine County. He served in this capacity for 28 years. George enjoyed serving the community as a Boy Scout leader and judge at the county fairs. He was particularly proud of his help in changing the Maple Grove School to the Muscatine School System while he served as School Director. He was of the Lutheran faith, served on the church board, taught Sunday School, was Sunday School Superintendent, and served fourteen years on the Lutheran Home Board of Directors. His hobbies were refinishing player pianos, attending concerts, collecting antiques, and refinishing furniture. He also answered many questions about raising flowers and gardening. He lived a quiet life, enjoying the richness of family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Alice Hunting Apland of Muscatine; his children, George Richard Apland of Ankeny, and his five children; a daughter, Ann Davis and her husband, Mike, and their children, Jeremy, Jonathan, and Dylan, Todd Apland and his wife, Sara, and their children, Benjamin and Samuel, Barry Apland and his wife, Kimberly, and their children, Hayley, Clayton, and Connor, their mother Joan Kolpa, Scott Apland and his wife, Stephanie, and their children, Paige and Madison, and Tony, their mother, Katy Apland, and a second son, Erick and his wife, Kimberly Gooch, of Farmington, Maine, and sister, Helen John of Omaha, Nebraska, also seven nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Lillian Larson and Ola Mae Hitz
