Last Thursday, George Phipps who has been a great sufferer the past four years from a stroke of paralysis, died after having been in a serious condition for several weeks. The deceased during his life in this community has enjoyed the highest respect and confidence of everyone and was a man of quiet and unassuming manner. In his home life he was a loving husband and a dutiful father, and while his end was anticipated, his death came as a severe blow to his wife and children. The funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon from his late residence and the interment followed in the Whiting Cemetery. The services were in charge of Rev. C.A. Park of the Christian church and the music was furnished by Mesdames E.S. Smith, with Mrs. Fred Wynd as organist. The pallbearers were six veterans of the Civil War, C.L. Persinger, T.H. Peabody, E.M. Cassady, E.J. Smith, D.T. Cutler and S.J. Atwood. The services were beautiful and impressive. The casket was covered with lovely floral wreaths and offerings, the tribute of the esteem in which he was held. George Phipps was born in Oxfordshire, England, January 1, 1837 and died at his home in Whiting, Iowa, October 7, 1909, being aged 72 years, nine months and six days. At the age of 17, with his parents, he migrated to America and lived in New York State until he was 20 years of age. He then moved to Whiteside County, Illinois, where with the first call for volunteers in the Civil War, he enlisted in Co. A. of the 34th Illinois Infantry and gave almost four years to the cause of his country. At the battle of Kennesaw, he was wounded while endeavoring to plant the regimental colors on the breastworks of the enemy and the following report was made by Lieut. Van Tassel of his valorous act: "Corporal George Phipps, of Company A. carrying the colors, pressed forward with the intention of planting the Stars and Stripes on the enemy's works, but was wounded before he could accomplish his design. Wounded as he was, he brought off the colors, when the skirmishers were ordered back, until a second shot compelled him to drop them, when Lieut. Teeter carried them off the Field." He was honorably discharged from service, August 8, 1865. February 10, 1864, while at home on furlough, he was united in marriage to Miss Georgianna Geidner of Whiteside County, Illinois. To this union were born three sons and three daughters, and he is survived by the three daughters, two sons, the widowed mother and one brother. At the close of the War, Mr. and Mrs. Phipps resided in Whiteside County until 1869 when they moved to Iowa and first settled in Fremont County where they resided until 1894 when they moved to Monona County and settled on their farm west of Whiting. They resided here until last February when they moved to their property in Whiting where Mr. Phipps death occurred. The children are William G. Phipps, Sloan, Iowa; Mrs. Charles Scoles, Mapleton, Iowa; Charles Phipps who died in young manhood; Mrs. Ed Davis, Whiting; Fred B. Phipps, Sioux City; and Mrs. J.N. Jackson, Woodsdale, Kansas, who was unable to be present for the funeral services as she could not be reached by telegraph in time to reach home. The deceased is also survived by a brother, William Phipps of Shelby County, Missouri, who attended the funeral services. Son Of...
