OBITUARY THE CHARITON LEADER Chariton, Iowa Tuesday, February 5, 1946 GEORGE PIERSCHBACHER The tragic death of the venerable George Pierschbacher, of English township, has shocked and saddened the entire community. He had gone to the timber in the morning and on coming home with a load of wood, the wagon overturned, throwing him to the ground injuring his head. The accident occured at 11 a.m. Tuesday after which he never regained consciousness, passing away the same evening at five o'clock. George Pierschbacher, son of Michael and Angeline Wolf Pierschbacher, was born near Peoria, Illinois, March 10, 1866, and departed this life January 29, 1946, at the age of 79 years, 10 months and 19 days. At the age of three years, he came with his parents to Lucas county, Iowa, and they took up their abode in English township. Here he grew to manhood and through his love for Mother Earth, his untiring dilligence and his good judgement, he became one of the foremost farmers of the county. On January 1, 1896, in the Methodist church in Chariton, he was married to Martha Jane Kenney, who died April 15, 1915. They established a home on the same farm where he had a continuous residence until the time of his death. They were the parents of seven children, the eldest being a daughter, Florence, who lived but a few months. The other six were boys, one dying in infancy. The five who survive are Enos, Henry, John, Delman and Boyd of English township. He was the last surviving member of his father's family, two brothers, John and Adam, and two sisters, Mrs. Frank Edwards and Mrs. Charley Peterson, having gone before. He also leaves 23 grandchildren, a number of nieces and nephews and many sorrowing friends and neighbors. Mr. Pierschbacher was a quiet unassuming man but he possessed those qualities of character that commanded the respect and confidence of all who knew him. When death came into his home and took the young wife and mother, leaving him with five small boys, the youngest but two years of age, he bravely shouldered the responsibilities of the home and the rearing of the sons, all of whom reached maturity, married and settled on farms near their father. The principles of industry and perserverance, of upright living and neighborliness that was so large a part of his own life have been thoroughly instilled into their lives. While they will miss the timely counsel and advice, the invisible spiritual qualities of George Pierschbacher's life, which went out into their lives and into other people's lives, will live on in his children, his grandchildren and in the community at large. Funeral services, in charge of Rev. Virgil Swanson, were held Friday afternoon, Feb. 1st, at 2 o'clock, at the Beardsley funeral home in Chariton. Burial was at Zion cemetery. Pallbearers were E. B. Shore, Orie Edwards, Dave Wirene, Walter Whitlatch, Roy Edwards and Raymond Webb. Music was rendered by D. O. Evans, Frank Johnson, Frances Dunshee and Hilma Webb.
