His father was born in Newport, Rhode Island and his mother in Fall River, Massachusetts. George Reed was a 28 year-old Seaman from New Bedford, when he enlisted at Dartmouth, Massachusetts on and was mustered into the 18th Mass. Infantry on August 6, 1862 as a Private in Co. I. His father was born in Newport, Rhode Island and his mother in Fall River, Massachusetts. George Reed was a 28 year-old Seaman from New Bedford, when he enlisted at Dartmouth, Massachusetts on and was mustered into the 18th Mass. Infantry on August 6, 1862 as a Private in Co. I. He was severely wounded in the right leg at the battle of Fredericksburg on December 13, 1862, being struck twice by bullets. He was admitted to Douglas Hospital, Washington, DC, where his leg was amputated six inches below the knee. George was granted a furlough on February 13, 1863 and returned to the hospital on April 11th. He was discharged due to disability at Washington, DC on April 21, 1863. He applied for an Invalid pension on April 21, 1863 and received initial benefits of $8 per month under Certificate #: 19356, due to disability caused by the amputation of his right leg. George resided at Dartmouth, Massachusetts and later New Bedford, where he was employed as a Cooper, or barrel maker. George was 30 years of age when he married Helen Maria Clark, age 27, at Methuen, Massachusetts on September 7, 1864. She was born in Methuen, the daughter of Ezekiel and Abigail Clark. George died at age 71 of a Cerebral Hemorrhage at his home 27 Borden Street, New Bedford and was buried at South Dartmouth Cemetery. His wife Helen died 27 Borden Street, New Bedford on April 30, 1908. ~~~~ Their children ~~~~ Alice M., born 1868; died November 16, 1874; Frederick O., born Aug. 1871; died May 26, 1872; Martha R., born Jan. 27, 1878.
