Noyes was well and favorably known throughout Montana by old timers. Early in the sixties he left Minnesota with Capt. James Fisk and was one of the first party the Captain ever brought west over the Northern route. Passing through what was then Montana, he went into the mines at Boise, Idaho, and he became acquainted with all the Pacific coast. Having been away from his family for two years, he crossed the plains by the old overland route, and returned to his family at St. Anthony, Minn. But he, as most men, after once having been in the wide West, could not endure the East, so he cut his visit short and crossed the plains via Denver and Salt Lake in '64. Arriving that season at Blackfoot, he obtained work at house building. Getting out of work, he used the money to buy a pony, with which he continued the journey to Argenta and Bannack. Immediately upon his starting from Blackfoot his pony sickened and died. This left him without any means of proceeding, excepting he tramped afoot. Without money and without food, and hardly any ranchmen on the road, and with only a fish hook and line he made the trip to Argenta, without tasting anything but fish. At Argenta he remained a day or two and then went to Bannack, where he tried to get work at his trade, blacksmithing, but not being successful he started for Argenta, and when part way on his return trip, Maj. Watson, the old-time blacksmith who was running a shop at Bannack, overtook him and told him that he was called to Virginia City on important business, and if he would go back to Bannack he would give him a few days work. Anything was acceptable to a man in his condition, and so Mr. Noyes went back with the Major and worked a few days in the shop. Then to Argenta again, where he soon got the position as foreman for Col. McLain's works, which place he occupied for a year, and as the Colonel's company "went up the flume," he returned once more to Bannack and went into partnership with Maj. Watson. In the fall of '66 he was joined by his wife and children, who were in Capt. Fisk's third expedition. When Silver Star started he moved there and built the Silver Star hotel, which, for that date, was considered quite an undertaking. In the spring of '69 his wife died, and she was the first person buried in that place. That summer he sent his children down the Missouri river with their maternal grandmother. Early in the seventies he and Parsons, of the Parsons' bridge, went to Colorado for cattle. They made a nice stake with their first herd, but attempting another drive in the same year caused them to fail. When Butte first boomed he went there and did the iron work on the Dexter mill for William Farlin. From that time until the time of his death he had resided in that city, with the exception of an occasional visit to his ranch. He was generous and kind to all. Many a man can testify to his honesty, and many a one is indebted to him for help.
