Read More	Georgetown Times September 26 1903 All Georgetown Mourns Capt Geo R Congdon Passes away after brief illness Sketch of his life Capt George R Congdon died at his home on Wednesday morning after a very brief illness of apoplexy. For more than a year his health has been precarious on account of a stroke of paralysis but his recuperation had been such as to inspire the belief and hope that he still had years of usefulness before him and when he left his home on Tuesday morning there was nothing in his condition apparently to awaken a thought that he would return to it wit the damp of death upon his brow but such was the case and he lingered unconsciously until the next morning when he expired in the midst of those who loved and venerated him. Capt Congdon was born in Georgetown in the year 1837. His father was from Rhode Island and came to Georgetown prior to the birth of his son and engaged in the mercantile pursuits until his death. He established the old and successful business house known in Georgetown for more than half a century under the successive firm of Congdon & Tilley & Hazard & Co. Born and chiefly raised in the south Mr Congdon very naturally imbibed principles and sentiments of southern life and manners and his devotion to these principles impelled him to take up arms in defense of the south in the late civil war and he cemented that devotion by his blood on the fields of Manassas. This was a typical ordeal in his life for it opposed him to principles for which his own kindred contended and tho they stood irreconcilably apart as mortal foes, but with that firmness and quick decision which served him so well in all the relations of life he moved as he as impressed and never looked back or counted the cost. He stood by the flag til furled forever and then submitted philosophically and like a man. He rose to a captaincy in Gregg's Regiment of Infantry and served with that distinguished both in the west and in the army of northern Va until detailed to superintend the building of a gunboat on the Pee Dee river designed to work in this harbor the building of which however was interrupted by Sherman's March though this state and it became necessary to burn it which Mr Congdon did and then resumed his place in his regiment where he remained until the close of the war. Returning home home he took up the thread of civil life where he left it years before and with varying success both in this state and in Florida he perused the even tenor os his way with that same intelligence industry and determined spirit that never forsook him. He was the intendent of Georgetown in 1872-8 and under his administration many improvements were inaugurated which vastly improved the municipal condition and to some extent aroused the old town from her lethargic state Chiefly among these was the organization of a police force the erection of street lamps never before attempted and the planting of shade trees in the town. It was during his administration that the Jones Bowley riot occurred in 78 which for a time threatened the city and its inhabitants with serious results. In this emergency he showed himself equal to the danger that confronted him and though the facilities then for communication with the outer world were exceedingly meager and uncertain his intelligent and prompt action brought an armed cutter of the government in the city in twelve hours and the enraged mob quickly vanished with little or no blood shed. In his every day life Capt Congdon displaced that gentleness and kindness which bespoke so clearly the beauties and excellencies of his true character as a gentleman a friend and a citizen. His taking away removes another one of those links that binds us to the illustrious past but the good he has done will not be interred with his bones they will live and shine with increasing luster as the years roll by and a host of his appreciative citizens and friends will always cherish for him that love and reverence which he blameless life so richly deserves. The funeral services were held at the residence Friday afternoon at 4 o'clock conducted by the Rev G H Johnston Rector of the Episcopal church. The body was committed to the earth by the Masons Worshipful Master JJ McKeithan reading the beautiful and impressive services of the order. Besides his devoted wife Capt Congdon leaves two children Mr Geo R Congdon Jr and Mrs WB Wright to whom the sympathy and love and of all the people of Georgetown goes out to in this their dark hour of sorrow and affliction. All of the prominent business houses of the city closed for a couple of hours during the funeral out of respect to the deceased. The floral offerings were beautiful and the funeral procession was one of the largest in the history of our city. The following gentleman acted as pall bearers.
