Memorial contributions may be directed to the Iowa River Hospice or to the Van Note family. George was born on July 26, 1931 in Nashua, IA, the son of Brazil and Louise (Bemer) Van Note. He grew up in the area of his birth and graduated from the Independence High School in 1950. On June 15, 1966, he was united in marriage to Alice Mattingly in Iowa City. The couple made their home and raised their family on a farm northwest of Marshalltown. George was employed in the maintenance department at the Iowa Veteran Home for 33 years before retiring in 1992. He enjoyed fishing, farming, gardening, and canning with his grandson; and, hosting fish fries with his work buddies. Most of all, George loved spending time with his family and grandchildren. He will be missed by his wife of 41 years, Alice; his children: Ray & Lyn Nelson, Ken & Kay Stewart, John & Marie Nelson, Ron Nelson, Cindy Jones, Jean Clark & Chris, Roxanne Van Note; his adopted son, Victor Hubert; his grandchildren: Jacob Nelson, Travis Stewart, Sierra Nelson, Amanda Davis, Steven, Marissa, Scott & Harley Nelson, Alexis Hubert, Josh Jones, Amber Kay, and John, Jamy, Jesse, Joe, & Carrie Clark; great grandchildren: Elijah Clark, Natalie Huber & Elizabeth Clark; three brothers: Wayne, Lee & Dean; two sisters, Helen Plein and Ruth Humes; and several nieces and nephews. In eternal life, George joins his parents; brother, Everett and sister-in-law, Midge Van Note.
