Read More	Monticello White County Democrat September 20, 1918 GEORGE ARRICK DEAD FROM GAS ------- FIRST LOCAL SOLDIER TO GIVE HIS LIFE IN WAR WITH GERMANY - DIED IN LAKEWOOD HOSPITAL IN NEW JERSEY FRIDAY NIGHT FROM EFFECT OF BEING GASSED. ------- Word was received here Saturday evening of the death of George Arrick of this city, which occurred Friday night at a hospital in Lakewood, New Jersey. Mr. Arrick who had been in active service in France suffered a nervous breakdown, and was also gassed while in the front line action. He was formerly a member of Company C, of the Indiana National Guards, and was one of the men who saw service on the Mexican border. While there he was transferred to Headquarters' Company of the 3rd Regiment, at South Bend. When the Rainbow Division was made up he was called from that Company and left about the same time that the twenty-one men went from Co. C. to the Rainbow Division. It is thought that he was not in the best of health when he enlisted for service, and after he was gassed his health suffered a break down, and he was returned to the United States to recover. He has been in the Hospital at Lakewood since April. Mr. Arrick was an experienced soldier having spent most of his life since he was twenty, as a member of the army. He was a veteran of the Spanish-American war, before serving with Company C. on the Mexican border two years ago making him a veteran of three wars. During the time he spent in Monticello he was employed as a painter. Mr. Arrick was a man of about forty-five years of age. Besides a step-mother, the deceased is survived by one brother, Harry Arrick, now of Washington, D.C., and three sisters, Mrs. Harry Troat [Trout] and Mrs. Vesta Zimmerman of this city, and Mrs. Milton Waring of Lafayette. Mr. and Mrs. Trout and Mrs. Waring left some time ago for New Jersey to see Mr. Arrick and were there for some time. They arrived home Wednesday. The body of Mr. Arrick arrived Tuesday evening, accompanied from Lakewood, N.J., by Harry Arrick, his brother. The funeral will be held this Friday afternoon. A military funeral will be will have a large part [sic]. From the brother it is learned that until six days before his death George was doing very well and was looking hearty. He began hiccoughing and when that starts upon those who have been gassed they survive but two or three days usually. Mr. Arrick, however, lived six days. He never knew when nor where he was gassed, it being a kind that did not make itself felt for some days.∼ARRICK, GEORGE RUSSELL - Cook Son of Andrew and Lucinda Arrick; born August 12, 1876, Page County, Iowa. Came to Indiana when about four years old. Farm-painter. Served a six year enlistment in the U.S. Regular Army, prior to 1916. enlisted in Company C, 3rd Infantry, Indiana National Guard June 26, 1916, Monticello, Ind. Served on Mexican Border. Assigned to Supply Company, 150th Field Artillery, 42nd (Rainbow) Division. Over-seas October 18, 1917. Returned to U.S. and died September 13, 1918, Lakewood, N.J. buried at Monicello, Ind.
