(Fuzz) Arrick, 65, well known owner of the lake resort called "Fisherman's Paradise" at Norway on Lake Shaffer, died at his home Saturday morning, after an extended illness. He underwent numerous blood transfusions. Born in White county, he spent all his life in that vicinity. He was a Spanish-American war veteran, wounded in action, and belonged to a Masonic lodge. His wife, Margaret, died Nov. 25, 1935. Surviving is a sister, Mrs. Bertha Riley, of Kenosha, Mo., and a half-sister, Mrs. Vesta Zimmerman, California. UNKNOWN CITATION Some years ago, when Fisherman's Paradise was flourishing, a Lafayette man remarked to us that he was never sure whether it was the good fried fish or the personality of Fuzz Arrick that was the main attraction at the popular resort. True it was that the fish and the chicken weren't the same without the genial smile and the hearty handshake of the proprietor. Fuzz was a character! As a young man he played on the famous Wolcott independent football team. He became a skilled interior decorator. He was wounded in the Spanish-American war. Standing at the foot of the stairs leading up to a card room one evening, Fuzz was shot through the body by a man who had been participating in the game. He was carried to the office of Dr. Goodwin, who decided on an emergency operation, declaring that Fuzz was going to die anyway, and surgery couldn't do him any harm. For several days Fuzz lingered on the brink of death, but finally recovered. He was made of tough fibre. Fuzz was one of the first to vision the possibilities of Shafer Lake as a summer resort. When he built Fisherman's Paradise, most people said he could never secure enough patronage to operate such a restaurant, but before long he was drawing customers from a wide area, from Logansport, Lafayette, Kokomo, Rensselaer, Hammond, Indianapolis and Chicago. His business grew, and two substantial additional were constructed to the original building. Carnival life was a hobby with Fuzz, and he was a past master at operating a blanket wheel. He could skin a sucker in a shell game, but later if somebody told him that the money had been saved to buy coal for the victim's mother, Fuzz would return the cash together with some of his own. He was generous to a fault. He would take the coat off his own back and give it to a friend. And everybody was his friend. During his protracted period of failing health, Fuzz never lost his cheerfulness. It was impossible for him to look on the dark side of things. For hundreds of visitors who came here, and for most of us in the community, Monticello will not be the same old town without Fuzz. Middle name: Elmer
