George Short, another of the pioneers of Des Moines county, has gone to his well-earned rest. He received the final summons at 4:30 o'clock Thursday afternoon at his home, one and one-half mile north of Augusta, having been in feeble health for some time. George Short was born in Ohio February 2, 1820, and came to Iowa in 1838 he was united in marriage with Miss Rachel Walker, who preceded him on the journey to the better land. To this couple were born the following children: Mrs. Henry Holland, of Villisca, Ia.; Ben and James Short, of Henry county; Wesley and Horatio Short of this county, and Mrs. E. G. Willard, of Burlington, all of whom survive, with twenty grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Mr. Short followed farming for many years and was successful in more than one sense of the word. He enjoyed the confidence and esteem of all who knew him. He also leaves a brother, James Short, in Aurora, and a sister, Mrs. Catherine Priddy, of this city. The funeral will be held from the home Sunday, January 29, at 10:30 a.m. with interment at Augusta. (Provided by Wm & SJ. Donath #48116482)
