His parents died at an early age, and with other members of the family, he came to this country and located in Crawford County, Ohio. December 17, 1849 he was married to Miss Ally E. Henderson, and to this union five children were born of whom four now remain, Mrs. T. J. Knott of Corning, Iowa, Mrs. George W. His parents died at an early age, and with other members of the family, he came to this country and located in Crawford County, Ohio. December 17, 1849 he was married to Miss Ally E. Henderson, and to this union five children were born of whom four now remain, Mrs. T. J. Knott of Corning, Iowa, Mrs. George W. Barclay of Huron, South Dakota, Mrs. Romeo Tracht of Tipton, and Mrs. Sheldon Matthews of Lenox, Iowa. Mr. Simmermaker removed from Ohio to Iowa in 1854 and located near Tipton. In December 1861, his wife died leaving him alone with his family of five little children. In July 1863 he was married to Miss Nancy Slater, and to this union one daughter was born, who became Mrs. J. B. Carl. She died in 1903. In the 50's soon after coming to Iowa Mr. Simmermaker united with the Presbyterian church of Sugar Creek in this Presbytery where his membership remained until his death. Through all those early years he was a faithful and indefatigable worker in the church, taking an especial interest in the Sabbath School. He was a man of irreproachable character, held in high esteem in the church and by all who knew him, "and being dead yet speaketh." In the last year of his life, poor health and inability to hear have prevented his attendance at church, and he could not be as useful in Christian work as in his early years. As a striking event his wife died just two months before he was called away. As a kind parent, a useful citizen, and an exemplary Christian he leaves a vacant place which will be long remembered. The funeral services were held Oct. 9th in the Presbyterian church, Tipton, Iowa, the pastor W. Rollin McCaslin, officiating, assisted by the Rev. J. W. Knott of Iowa City and Rev. J. N. Naly of Tipton. Interment was at Hebron cemetery.
