Description	:	George Varney Jr. was the son of George Varney Sr., who was born in Biddeford, York Co., Maine and a blacksmith by trade, who moved to the Dedham, Norfolk Co., Massachusetts area. There George Varney Sr. married on either 21 January or 8 February 1844 in Dedham, Norfolk Co., Mass., to Mary Jane F. Thornton. The Mass. town records have two different dates. Read More	George Varney Jr. was the son of George Varney Sr., who was born in Biddeford, York Co., Maine and a blacksmith by trade, who moved to the Dedham, Norfolk Co., Massachusetts area. There George Varney Sr. married on either 21 January or 8 February 1844 in Dedham, Norfolk Co., Mass., to Mary Jane F. Thornton. The Mass. town records have two different dates. Their son, George Varney Jr., born 1847, has a Massachusetts birth and christening record to confirm his birth and parents. When George Varney Jr., came out west is unknown but he appears to be in the Denver, Colo. area by 1880. There he married on 19 October 1891 to Emily Louise Rood French who was divorced from her husband Dr. Marcena H. French.. George Varney Jr., and Emily had a son, born to them on 16 July 1892 but he died at age 2 weeks and 5 days on 4 August 1892 from Cholera Infantum. The remaining years with Emily were fraught with her declining mental capacities, what today would have been diagnosed as early onset dementia or Alzheimer's. Emily died tragically on 6 August 1898. George Varney Jr then remarried to Mary E. Emery on 18 October 1898 and by 1901 the marriage had dissolved after he had kicked her out of the home. They divorced on 9 October 1902, and Mary E. Emery stayed in the Denver area and remarried on 15 November 1903 to Owen B. Vail, a religious charlatan and convicted counterfeiter who in the guise of a christian charity organization "Christian Volunteer Warriors" bulked thousands of dollars out of people in five states and left a trail of ruined women in his wake. Mary E. Emery and Owen were divorced by 1905 and she moved to Flushing, Long Island, N.Y. where she tried to claim part of the real estate of late 1st husband George Varney Jr. George Varney Jr was buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery as the USGenWeb site list the burials for Cedar Hill and contain his name, with Emily's, http://files.usgwarchives.net/co/douglas/cemeteries/cedarhl.txt, research by Jan Herman in 2003.Rootsweb. He was 57 years of age. Mr. Varney had been in poor health for several years, but his last sickness only dated back to the first of May. He was an old resident of Douglas County, and an old soldier. The remains were brought to Castle Rock on Monday and the G.A.R. post conducted the funeral service at the Castle Rock Cemetery Tuesday afternoon at 2:30. He had no relatives and was living alone.
