Schiefen, northwest of Hawarden, were held at 9:30 Saturday morning at St. Mary's Catholic church in this city with Rev. Father R. Graf of Hawarden, Rev. Father Leo Berger of Lake City and Rev. Father Ernest of Akron conducting the services. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery here. Mr. Vogel had been at the home of his daughter only about a week preceding his death. In company with Mrs. Vogel he had been spending a month visiting relatives and friends in Nevada and California and stopped here for a visit on their way home to Lake City, Iowa. He was taken ill on Friday following their arrival on Wednesday and passed away the following Thursday. George Vogel was born at Roxhelm, Bavaria, Germany, February 27, 1861, and died December 15, 1938, at the age of 77 years, 9 months and 18 days. In 1879 at the age of 18, he came to American and located at Clinton, Iowa, in 1880 where he entered the employ of the North Western Railway Company as a machinist. He was transferred to Lake City, Iowa, in 1888, to Eagle Grove in 1897, and came to Hawarden with his family in 1909 where he continued in the employ of the railway company until 1926 when he was pensioned after 47 years of continuous service. Following his retirement Mr. & Mrs. Vogel moved back to Lake City in 1928 where they have since made their home although continuing to make frequent visits here. He was united in marriage with Miss Emma Birdsall at Lake City on May 1, 1889, and she survives him. Three daughters were born to them but the youngest, Florinda, passed away in Hawarden in 1921 (she died in Oakdale Hospital but buried in Hawarden). The surviving daughters are Mrs. Elizabeth Trainor of Chicago, and Mrs. J. B. Schiefen of Hawarden. There are seven grandchildren. He is also survived by a cousin, Right Rev. Monsignor Keller of Fayette, Iowa and a nephew George Weild of Anita, Iowa. During hs long residence in this city Mr. Vogel served as shop foreman for the North Western cocmpany. He was an industrious and highly dependable workman and was held in great esteem by his fellow workers and by all the citizens of Hawarden who came to know him. He possessed a kindly, genial disposition and aside from his work, his interests were centered in his home. Many old friends here regret his passing. Those from a distance who were here to attend the funeral included Mrs. Elizabeth Trainor of Chicago, Rev. Father Leo Berger, Mrs. Mary Loftus, Mrs. Wm.
