Brown Died Monday Evening At His Home In This City Geo. W. Brown died at his home in this city on Monday evening about 9:45, after a lingering illness of several weeks, at the age of 84 years, 10 months and 15 days. Mr. Brown was a partner of our father in the mercantile business when we were born, and so we have known Mr. Brown our entire life. He was a useful and progressive citizen and stood for the better things of the community. There were three things that Mr. Brown stood for and everybody knew it --- Oddfellowship, the Democratic party and the Christian church. He worked hard at all of them and was a leader. Mr. Brown was born in Rushville, Illinois, but landed in Kansas May 9th, 1871, and went into the mercantile business in July of the same year and sold goods for 20 years. He was married October 1, 1872, to Miss Anna Butler, formerly of Illinois. Raised a family of four children all of whom are married and have good homes of their own. They are Mrs. Dora Eloise Strain of Houston, Texas; Mrs. Daisy Chadsey of this city; Harry H. Brown of Texarkana, Texas; and Mrs. Cecil Greve of Webster Grove, Mo. Mr. Brown was postmaster for four years under the first Cleveland administration, and for four years was secretary of the National Mutual Insurance Co. of Pittsburg. He was a member of the legislature in the house in 1875, and was a candidate on the Democratic ticket when the Republicans were overwhelmingly in power. He was elected clerk of the Court of Common Pleas and served nine months without pay when the Supreme Court declared it unconstitutional. He was mayor of the city at the time the water works was installed, and has acted as councilman and city clerk. He was elected as Grand Master of the I.O.O.F. of Kansas in 1901 and 1902, and served as representative in 1906 to the I.O.O.F. Sovereign Grand Lodge of the World. Mr. Brown was the leading spirit in the Christian church and when they had no pastor he did the preaching. In lodge work Mr. Brown was known all over Kansas and in this district he was secured upon all occasions when the Odd Fellows had any kind of an extra affair. Mr. Brown lived to a ripe old age, but until the beginning of the present year he was active and chopped enough wood each season to burn through the winter. We shall all miss him. He was a visitor at this office frequently and we furnished him with cardboard and paper to make most of the charts and drawings which he took so much delight in making. He was a penman who was asked to write many public documents before the time of the typewriter. Mr. Brown was a member of the Modern Woodmen of America and had been consul and clerk of that order. Besides his four children, Mr. Brown is survived by the following grandchildren: Miss Ruth Chadsey of Chicago; Miss Gloria Joan Greve of St. Louis; Jack Chadsey, a student of the Teachers College at Pittsburg; and F. N. Chadsey, Jr., now assistant bank examiner at Kansas City.
