Mr. Davis had the contract for carrying the mail between the post office and the depot and for many years night and morning at train time he could be seen at this work, but failing health for the past three years caused him to have to delegate this to someone else at times. The last year or two that Ralph Kennedy lived here he helped Mr. Davis with this work a good share of the time, but after Mr. Davis found it necessary to have Abner McKee handle the mail until finally several months ago he had to give it up entirely. Occasionally he would get down town but these trips became less and less as he became more and more feeble. We have known Mr. .Davis for many years. Long before the railroad came to Sargent we became acquainted with him, something like thirty three years ago. For many years he resided in Arcadia and worked in the livery barn there for P. W. Rounds. All who had to haul their hogs and their grain to that city during those years probably put up at the Rounds barn occasionally. In those days we took our grub with us, ate it in the office of the barn and then took our bedding up in the hay mow of the barn and slept there overnight. Many a night has the editor as a boy slept in the maw of that barn, and the next morning Mr. Davis helped us hitch up the as to the team and saw us safely started out for home. Always gruff, blustery, he nevertheless, he was accommodating and much more kind than his own manner would indicate. OBITUARY: George W. Davis was born in Toronto City Canada, June 7, 1848, and died at Sargent, Nebraska, January 22, 1923, at the age of 74 years, 7 months, and 15 days. Mr. Davis came to the United States at an early age and lived for some time at Dennison, Iowa. He was married three times. His first wife was Miss Susan Jones of that city. One daughter was born to this union, the mother dying at the time. This daughter is now Mrs. J. W. Bennett of Mitchell, Nebraska. Two years after the death of Mrs. Bennett's mother, Mr. Davis married Miss Sarah Jane Robinault, also of Dennison, Iowa. To this union was born three daughters Mae, Maude and Margaret Maude died when a baby. Mae married Charles M. Robinson, a young man who taught school at Longwood about eight miles from Sargent many years ago and they resided in Arcadia until her death June 26, 1913. After the railroad came up to Sargent in November 1899, the livery barn business at Arcadia ceased to be very profitable and within a few years George Davis family moved to this city and Mr. Davis secured employment at the Star Livery barn. The youngest daughter Margaret went-to school here several years and was then united in marriage with Raymond Geiser and they now live near Arnold, Nebraska. Mrs. Geiser came over from Arnold Sunday and was at the bedside of her father at the time of his death. Gerold Robinson twenty one year old son of Mrs. Charles Robinson arrived here Wednesday from Denver, Colorado, too late to attend the funeral. April 20 1913, Mrs. Davis died, just two months before her daughter Mrs. Robinson. Six years later Mr Davis married Mrs. Dorothy Rittenhouse whom he had known for a great many years, and she has been be a faithful and devoted wife to the end caring for him very tenderly during the many months of his illness. In addition to the two daughters now living, there, were nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. One of grandchildren Fern Opal the little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Robinson is dead. The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon at two o’clock at the M. E. Church, the Rev. M. M. Long preaching the sermon. The choir was consisted of Mr and Mrs. O. M. Scott, Mrs. S. D. Wheeler. The pall bearers were Pete Melham, Clarence Metcalf, Jens Ottun, John Wykoff, Plin Metcalf and C. H. Chase, The services began with the song, Does Jesus Care," which was followed by scripture reading and prayer by the pastor. Then came the song, "Break Thou the Bread of Life." Mr Long used as his text the words "There is but a step between me and death." found in first Samuel, 20th chapter and third verse. During the course of his "sermon the speaker emphasized three things in addition to the fact that it is but a step from life unto death. Those three things are that we must each and every one take the step; that we do not know when the call to take the step will come and that the step is one of separation. The separation will be from every earthly tie and the life here should be such that it will not be one of separation from God after death. “Lead Kindly Light" by the choir, followed by the people filing past the open casket closed the services the at the church.
