GEORGE DAVIS DIES AT GRAND ISLAND Last weeks leader the serious condition of Mrs. George Davis, following an operation for the removal of cancer of the stomach, was in West Loup County items. Before that issue of the Leader was in the hands of many of our readers. Mrs. Davis had passed away at the general hospital at Grand Island, Nebraska Mrs. Davis left Sargent a few weeks before that to visit at the home of her son Todd Rittenhouse of Grand Island. As she had not been feeling well for sometime, she had physicians examine her and it was discovered that she had a cancer of the stomach. Then came the operation for its removal, the operation being performed Tuesday, February 10th, at the general hospital. Her daughter, Mrs. Will Dunbar of Almeria, left morning for that city, arriving a short time after the operation was over. During the operation her heart gave her considerable trouble for a few days afterwards. Because of this her children were notified and some of them went to Grand Island Friday following the operation. By the end of the week her heart action became much better and those who went left returning to their homes as she seemed to be improving. However other bodily functions began to cease and she grew worse death coming Friday morning, February 20th. The body was prepared for burial and then taken to Trumbull in the extreme northwest part of Clay county Nebraska and located about eighteen miles nearly south of Grand Island, There at two o'clock, Saturday afternoon, February 21st, the funeral was held in the M. E. church. Interment was then made beside her first husband in a cemetery located not far from a farm in the southeast part of Hall county, that had been the homestead of the Rittenhouse family for several years. The pall bearers were four of her sons and two nephews:—Harry, Thomas, Todd and Ross Rittenhouse, Roe and Elias and Bert Tolbert. The following obituary was written by a Grand Island woman, a friend of the family. In a simple log cabin on the bank. of the little Blue river, in Shelby Indiana, Dorothy Ann Hill was born March 10, 1853. After a period of six weeks the young mother passed away, leaving the helpless babe alone in the world. But He, who notes even the fall of a sparrow, was with her and she was taken into the home and hearts of a splendid christian family, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Tolbert, where she was given the fondest parental care and was tenderly loved by her ten foster brothers and sisters. February 14th, 1867, she was married to William Rittenhouse at Blue River Chapel, Shelby county, Indiana. There they established their first home but after six years they came to Nebraska and settled on a homestead in the southeast part of Hall county. Blessed with a happy, loving nature, and endowed with a beautiful singing voice, she was a great factor for joy in that pioneer home and community. Early in their married life Mr. and Mrs. Rittenhouse, affiliated with the United Brethern church. A child like faith and sublime trust marked every hour of her life, and when the tide of her life was at its lowest ebb, she faintly repeated a verse of the hymn "God Will Take Care of You." Mr. and Mrs. Rittenhouse were the parents of eleven children, two dying in infancy, the rest all living to manhood. James, the oldest passed away at Denver a few years ago at the age of fifty years. Those living are as follows:—Harry Rittenhouse living at Anselmo, Nebraska; Mrs. Minnie Dunly,, Almeria. Nebr.: Todd Rittenhouse, Grand Island, Nebr.; Mrs. Alice Yocum and Thomas Rittenhouse, Almeria, Nebr , Ross and Jesse Rittenhouse and Mrs.Bessie Lundburg, Zion City Illinois. After maintaining their residence in Hall county for several years, the Rittenhouse family left there and went to Blaine county, Nebr., where they lived for a number of years, later moving from there into Loup county and locating about five miles west of Almeria on the quarter section now owned by Roy Niles. In the year 1908 Mr. Rittenhouse passed away and was buried at Trumbull, Nebraska. After that Mrs. Rittenhouse lived at various places. Some of the time with different ones of her children and at two different times at Trumbull. In 1918 she was married to George W . Davis of Sargent. Nebr.,where she lived until his death three years later. From that time on she has ever been a loved and welcome guest in the homes of her children, always bringing sunshine and happiness with her. On February 10th she was stricken with a serious malady, and though she received all that medical skill and the constant loving care of her children could offer, the death angel closed her eyes, and stilled the loving voice and wafted the pure spirit of the mother to her bright eternal home. "We cannot measure joys but by their loss, When, blessings fade away we see them then. Our richest clusters grow around the cross, And in the night time angels sing to men. "Come then, my soul, be brave to do and bear; Thy life is bruised that it may be more sweet; The cross will soon be left, the crown we'll wear, Nay. we will cast it at the Savior's feet. "And up among the glories never told, Sweeter than music of the marriage bell, Our hands will strike the vibran harp of geld. To the glad song 'He doeth all things well.'" The following verse is published at the request of Mrs. Otis B. Sturms. A Precious one from us is gone, A place is vacant in our home Which never can be filled. God in his wisdom has recalled The boon his love had given, And though the body slumbers here, The soul is safe in Heaven."
