Eckert, prominent Mason and junior member of the former mortuary firm of Charles E. Eckert and Son, one of Lima's pioneer undertaking establishments, died suddenly of heart disease shortly after midnight Tuesday in his home, 1036 W. Elm-st. Eckert had just retired when he was stricken. His wife was with him when the end came. Eckert was born in Miltonville, Butler-co, but had been a resident of Lima for 40 years. After coming to this city in 1896, Eckert was employed by the Banta Candy Co., and also worked as a funeral assistant. Eckert was a Spanish American war veteran. Upon his return from service, he entered the funeral home business established by his father, Charles E. Eckert in April 1902. Eckert has been retired since the firm was dissolved last June, and E. M. Sowards, the company successor, took over the 206 S. West-st funeral home. In addition to his war service during the conflict of 1898, Eckert also was a captain in the Ohio National Guard unit in Lima. Eckert's illness last November necessitated several week's hospitalization, but he apparently had been in good health recently. Eckert also ranked high in fraternal circles, being one of the outstanding members in Masonic orders, and a past president of the Knights of Pythias lodge. He had played a leading role in the administration of the Masonic 21st degree team. Affiliations included membership in Garrett Wykoff lodge, No. 585 F&AM, Lima Chapter No 49, RAM, council and Shawnee consistory, of which he was a past commander. He also was a member of the Toledo Consistory, Toledo shrine and Garrett Wykoff Blue lodge. Also widely known in Lima service clubs, Eckert was a member of the Kiwanis club. He was a former president in the organization and also had held most of the high offices at one time. Eckert was a past president of the Ohio Funeral Directors-assn. He held this executive post in 1934. As a member of Market Street Presbyterian church, Eckert played a prominent part in official board work of the church. Besides Eckert's widow, who formerly was a Central High school teacher, he is survived by a son, Charles F., who is a student at Ohio Wesleyan university; a daughter, Mary, a senior at Central High school and a sister, Mrs. H. C. Taylor, of Shawnee-tp. Last rites will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday in the W. Elm-st home. The Rev. Cornelius Nicholas Bakker will be in charge. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery. The body will be taken from the Sowards funeral home to the Eckert residence Thursday morning. (published in The Lima News, Wednesday, December 16, 1936)
