While attending the seventh ward republican caucus at the Odd Fellows hall, corner of Church and Willard streets, last night, George W. Ellis, was seized with an attack of apoplexy, and died almost instantly. Mr. Ellis Ellis had left his home, 225 South Schuyler street, about 7:00 o'clock last evening, apparently in better health than he had been for some time, and had gone direct to the hall. He was engaged in a chat with some friends, just before the meeting began, when some one called attention to a flue that had taken fire in a nearby building back of the hall. Mr. Ellis looked with the others, and remarking, "If they put a handful of salt in the stove it would put that out," fell over dead. Dr. Holloway, a retired physician was in attendance and Dr. Barton was also called, but the stricken man was beyond medical aid. The deceased was born in Xenia, Ohio, November 17, 1835, and had been a resident of Ottumwa for twenty years, coming here from Nebraska in 1892. He was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic, having served throughout the civil war with Company D, of the Seventy-ninth Ohio volunteers. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Caroline Ellis, three daughters, Mrs. C.E. Russell of San Franciso, Calif., Mrs. E.E. Austin of Moulton, Neb., and Mrs. N.L. Nelson of Ottumwa, and by two sons, M.R. Ellis of Peoria and E.A. Ellis of this city. One step-son, J.L. Matson lives in Ottumwa, and several brothers survive in the east.
