Harker Found On The Street Behind Team Mules Believed Docile Cause His Instantaneous Death An unexpected blow on the face from the hoof of a treacherous mule ended the life of George W. Harker this morning. So far as ascertained, there were no eyewitnesses, the prostrate form of Mr. Harker having been discovered by A. Friedley, who gave the alarm to the police. He was found behind his team, which was standing opposite the canning factory, 1430 Sycamore Street. From the injury, which was to the jaw and right cheek, it is believed the brain was injured and death evidently was Instantaneous. Trusting there might be a spark of life left, the police conveyed the man to St. Francis hospital, where death was confirmed. The remains were taken to the O'Keefe and Towne parlors for burial preparation. According to the widow, Mr. Harker owned the mules and had handled them for several years. No indication had even been given, she said, that they were anything but docile. During the past two years the victim had been teaming for the city and today began his duties at the usual hour. He had loaded a wagon of cinders at the plant of the canning corporation and had driven onto Sycamore street at 7:50am when he met death. Mr. Harker was 50 years old and leaves a widow, but no children. He lived at 343 Independence Avenue. -------------- Waterloo Daily Courier, 9 May 1918 KICK BY MULE PROVED FATAL George W. Harker Believed To Have Been Killed Instantly, Found In Road George W. Harker, 343 Independence Avenue, was instantly killed early yesterday morning near the canning factory. A. Friedley found the body laying behind his team. It was believed that death was instantaneous, being caused by a blow on the face and head from the hoof of one of the mules he was driving. As far as known, no one witnessed the death. The man was taken to St. Francis hospital in the police ambulance, where death was confirmed. The remains were removed to O'Keefe and Towne's mortuary. Mr. Harker had been employed for the past two years teaming about the city. He has had the team of mules for several years and they have always been considered very docile. Yesterday morning he went about his usual work and had loaded his wagon with cinders from the canning factory. He drove out onto Sycamore street, where he met his death about 7:30. He came to Waterloo from Frederika about fourteen years ago. He has resided here since. Surviving are his widow, parents, Mrs. and Mrs. J. W. Harker; brother, James; and sister, Mrs. L. {sic F} A.
