He married Nellie T. Miller on June 28, 1887. They were the parents of 6 children: Osborn, Carlton, Gerald, Agnes, Jess, and Carolyn. March 28, 1919 - Newell Mirror - George W. Chaney, who has been actively engaged in the banking business in Newell for forty years, and a resident of this community almost fifty years, passed away at his home Sunday at about midnight. Death was due to heart trouble, from which he had been suffering several weeks. One of the largest funerals ever to be held in Newell took place Wednesday afternoon in the Congregational church at two o'clock, the Rev. T.M. Higginbotham in charge. Rev. Haakon Jorgensen of the Danish Lutheran church read the scriptures and Rev. John Jensen spoke a few words of sympathy. The Rev. M.L. Carver was unable to take part in the service because of ill health. A male quartet from the Presbyterian church at Storm Lake sang "Still, Still with Thee," and "Crossing the Bar." The quartet consisted of Don G. LaGrange, George Egington, Prof. Swanson, and Dr. H.H. Ervin, Mrs. Dona Foley Baurose sang, "Hark, Hark! My Soul!" Out of town friends at the memorial service were Carlton L. Chaney, Chicago; Dr. and Mrs. J.D. Riggs, Denver, Colorado; M.J. Chaney and son, Vermilion, South Dakota; Dr. and Mrs. G.R. Collins, Vermilion, South Dakota; Mr. and Mrs. H.J. Eaton, Quincy, Illinois; Mr. and Mrs. F.G. Redfield and Griffeth Progan, Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. L.F. Parker, Cherokee; Ruth Norton, Duluth, Minnesota; Mr. and Mrs. E.R. Norton, Castant, Iowa; Edgar Norton, Grinnell, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Joe Wadsley and Guy E. Mack, Storm Lake; Mrs Kirkpatrick, Rolfe; Mr. and Mrs. Otto Bjornstad and Miss Lura Dickey, Spencer, Iowa; and R.T. Benson, Sheldon, Iowa. Pall bearers were Morris A. Chaney, Vermilion; Dr. Ralph G. Collins, Vermilion; Ernest Norton, Grinnell; Miller Redrield, Cherokee; and Griffeth Brogan, Des Moines. George W Chaney was born on a farm in Ogle county, IL, 82 and 1/2 years ago, his birthday being October 8, 1856. When he was 7, his father's family moved to Rockford, IL, where he attended school and grew to manhood, uniting with the Baptist church there at an early age. In the year 1880 he came with his brother Morris to Iowa and lived on a farm southeast of Newell. Later the brothers bought land one mile east of town where they lived for a number of years. He became a member of the firm of The Miller & Chaney Bank in the year 1888. A business man, he was always dependable and honest and has been a friend in need to many who have appreciated his kind helpfulness. On June 28, 1887, he was united in marriage to Nelle T. Miller, fourth daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D.C. Miller. Their home was blessed with three sons and three daughters, Osborn, Carlton, Gerald, Agnes, Jess, and Carolyn. It has been an unusually happy home, giving a heritage which the children have appreciated more and more as they have gone out into the world. In later life the grandchildren have been a source of comfort and joy to him. A happy reunion with his sisters and brothers at the home of Mrs. J.D.S. Riggs in Denver in June 1920 has been a treasured memory. Since that time 2 sisters and 2 brothers have been called to the HOmeland. Mrs Riggs of Denver and M.J. Chaney of Vermillion, SD, survive him. The conditions following the war contributed largely to his general breakdown in health. He weathered the financial storm in a masterful way, having at heart the interests of the community as well as his own. George W. Chaney was one of God's noblemen. His life was one of service. He always stood for the best things in his home town and county, was a kind and loving husband and father, a staunch friend and an useful citizen. He has merited the commendation, "Well done, good and faithful servant, enter thou into the joy of the Lord.
