Biography: "CHANEY, OSBORN, Lumber Dealer; yard corner First avenue and Kishwaukee street; residence 203 North Second street; born in Harrison Co., Va., March 31, 1818; was a resident of Green Co., Ohio, four years, and came to Bureau Co., Ill., in July, 1835; remained there six months, and in December, 1835, went to Galena, where he resided eighteen months, when he returned to Bureau Co., and staid six months longer, at which time he removed to what is now White Rock Tp., Ogle Co., in 1838; engaged in farming there, and continued at that business until he removed to Rockford, in August, 1864; during his residence in White Rock Tp. He was for four years Constable, Justice of the Peace four years, Assessor eight years, Supervisor two or three terms, and School Director almost continuously during his residence there; married Amanda Rice, March 16, 1843; she was born in Ellicottville, Cattaraugus Co., N.Y., March 24, 1820; they have seven children, all born in Ogle Co., Louise A., Edward O., Alice A., Mary E., George W., Morris J., and Harry E.; lost one daughter, Harriet E., who died July 17, 1862 [sic, 1861], aged 8 years and 3 months. Kett & Co., 1877, pg. 471] Obituary: Newell Weekly Mirror - 27 Apr 1883 - Newell, Buena Vista, IA - DIED. -- At his residence east of Newell, Iowa, April 21, aged 65 years, Mr. Osborn Chaney. The subject of this sketch was born near Salem, Harrison county, Va., in the year 1818. He early removed to Ohio and from there to the then new and sparsely settled state of Illinois. He resided for a term of years in Ogle county, removing from thence in the year 1864 to the city of Rockford, Ill., where he resided for 17 years, until he removed to Newell in 1881. He was extensively known in business circles as a man who united business capacity with stern integrity. In 1843 he was united in marriage to Miss Amanda Rice, who, with seven children, grown to manhood and womanhood survive him to mourn the loss of a kind and devoted husband and parent, one who filled a large place in their hearts. This community has sustained the loss of a good citizen; that Mr. Chaney held a warm place in the hearts of the people of this community was evidenced by that large congregation of sad and sympathetic faces which more than filled the seating capacity of the Congregational church at his funeral. Bro. Chaney gave his heart to God more than forty years ago. He was, during his residence in Rockford and at the time of his death, a member of the Baptist church. He was a man of strong faith, of wide Christian experience, of a pure life, & genial nature and a broad catholic spirit. He has bequeathed a legacy to his posterity the value of which cannot be compared by any earthly standard. The unceasing vigils at the bedside of the sufferer where the family and physician did all that human power could do to alleviate and restore, evinced how hard it was to let one so deeply cherished go. The fatal disease was typhoid pneumonia. Although suffering intensely at times his spiritual vision was clear as the light, it was 'all light' in the 'valley' not a shadow to cloud his spiritual vision. For days his spirit seemed hovering on the border of the spirit land, and at times he seemed to catch a view of that bright land and his face glowed with heavenly peace as he passed on to receive the crown of life and the 'well done.' Services were held at the family residence at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 22, the Rev. Mr. Gorton read a selection of scripture followed by prayer by Rev. Mr. Fancher. The family and near kindred were left alone with their precious dead and their last lingering look taken. The funeral procession moved to the church where appropriate services were held. The sermon preached by the Rev. Mr. Gorton was from the text, 'I have glorified Thee on the earth I have finished the work which Thou gavest me to do.' This text was a favorite quotation of Bro. Chaney 'ere he passed' to the 'spirit land.' Appropriate remarks were made by the Rev. Mr. Fancher and prayer by the Rev. Mr. Moulton. The services were very solemn and impressive. The remains were viewed by the large audience and the funeral cortege moved to the silent city of the dead. Contributed by Juli.
