George Washington Clark was born in DuPage County, Illinois on 16 Dec 1839 and died 20 Nov 1933 at age 93 years, 11 months and 4 days at his home in Appleton City, St. Clair, Missouri. He was a son of David Keeler Clark and Mary Jarvis, and grew to manhood on his father's farm and received a good education as was offered by the schools of that time. At age 10, he lost his father who was killed by lightning (1850). He lived with his mother and her new husband Samuel Franklin, whom she married about 1852, until he was about age 15. George then lived with his his Uncle Barrett Bass Clark from age 15 to 21 before retuning to his family farm in Downers Grove. George continued on the farm for several years. When the farm suffered a fire with loss of barn and livestock, he moved to St. Clair County, Missouri south of Appleton City and became a stock raiser. This occurred in 1868 when George W. and his brother Ezra K. and the John Burns family moved from DuPage County, Illinois to Appleton, Missouri. The family traveled by covered wagon and the brothers on horseback. [Brother Ezra married a daughter of John Burns, named Mary.] William was the first of the Clarks to go to St. Clair County, Missouri (Appleton City) where he was also engaged in farming. In 1870, George's sister Cornelia and his mother Mary Jarvis Clark (Franklin) joined them in Missouri. Both George and Ezra settled on land southeast of Appleton City when they bought "School Grant Land" for $1.25 per acre. Not liking the prairie, they sold the following year, and bought land west of Monegaw Creek. This was where they built their homes and reared their families. When George came to Missouri, he had little as to finances, but over time he became one of the large feeders and shippers of stock in the community and county. He continued to live on the farm until 1915 when he moved into Appleton City community. George's farm started with 60 acres, and he increased it until her owned 680 acres, all in the same locality. He helped build the first school house (Merrifield School). Soon after Appleton City was laid out, George bought a half block of ground in Appleton City where he planted trees. More than 40 years later, he developed the property and built a beautiful home where he spent his last days in this life. When George moved to Appleton City, he became a builder: the G. W. Clark Block in the center of town was built by him in 1911. He was responsible for building more business places on Main St. than any other person in the city's history and he was the owner of them. George was director of the First National Bank of Appleton City for 30 years, served as vice -president for 20 years, and in 1926 became president of the bank. He held this position until the First National Bank merged with Merchants Bank. He built his home on Maple Street. He saw many changes over time and cast his first vote in 1860 for Abraham Lincoln. He was active in the Methodist church, but never united in membership of the church even though he was a regular attendee and generous contributor to the ministry and erection of its building. George and his family were active in community affairs and had frequent guests in their home. George married first Mary Elizabeth (Lizzie) Smith in DuPage County, Illinois, and she bore 5 children. Lizzie left the home on 7 Mar 1879 and it was said she ran away to Minnesota with a farm hand. George subsequently divorced Lizzie. George married Adella French Guthridge (widow of Joseph C. Guthridge) on 15 Mar 1882 and she bore 3 children. At the funeral in 1933, the children by Lizzie were: Charlie living in Long Beach, California; Minnie Elder living in Los Angeles, California; Cora Tyler living in Garden Grove, California; Ada had died several years earlier; Nellie died as an infant. The children by Adella French Guthridge were: Ruth Anderson living in Boise, Idaho; William E. living in Sidney, Montana, and Mary (Carrie Marie) Herrman living in Springfield, Missouri. George and Lizzie had a child named Nellie who died in Barbers Corner, Will, Illinois. Initially, Barbers Corner was in DuPage County, but by 1900 it was in Will County. As a final tribute to George Washington Clark, the mayor of Appleton City, Missouri issued the following proclamation. "Amid the sad and frequent occurrences of death it occasionally happens that a man passes away whose life has been so useful to the community as to deserve special honor from his fellow men. In the death of Geo. W. Clark we feel that such an occasion has arisen and respectfully request that all business be suspended during the funeral services to be held Thursday, November 23, 1933, at 2:30 PM at the First Methodist Church. Those of us who were privileged in association with Geo. W. Clark, who were honored, inspired and enriched by his friendship, are better for his living. As we knew him in life we recall him in memory --- a man among men, sturdy as the oak, true as steel, kindly in his judgments, uncompromising in his standards, a splendid picture of friend, husband, father, citizen. Let us join the family in paying tribute to one of our most useful citizens." George W. was found in 1880, 1900, 1910, and 1920 US censuses, each of them at Appleton City or Twp., St. Clair, Missouri. George W. was also found on one Ancestral file entry, five International Genealogical Index entries, and two Pedigree Research Files of www.familysearch.org. In 1880 census, Geo W, age 40, born in Illinois, both parents born in New York, farmer; wife Lizzie M., age 34, born in Illinois, both parents born in New York; [both parents for the children were born in Illinois.] son Charlie A, age 16, born in Illinois; daughter Minnie L., age 13, born in Illinois; daughter Cora M., age 11, born in Missouri, daughter Ada E., age 6, born in Missouri. In 1900 census, George W., head, married 18 years, born Dec 1839, age 60, born in Illinois, father born in Connecticut and mother in New York, farmer; wife Adella, married 18 years, born Mar 1857, age 43, born in Ohio, both parents born in Ohio, mother of 3 with 3 living; [all children father born in Illinois and mother in Ohio]; single daughter Ruth, born Mar 1888 in Missouri, age 12; single son Willie, born Nov 1891 in Missouri, age 8; single daughter Mary, born Apr 1894, age 6. Also living with them was a married (12 years) daughter Minnie McPherson, born Dec 1866 in Illinois, age 33, both parents born in Illinois, no children; a single male servant Earnest Anderson, born Feb 1882 in Missouri, age 18, both parents born in Germany. In 1910 census, George W, head, second marriage for 27 years, age 70, born in Illinois, father born in Ohio and mother in New York, farmer; wife Della F., second marriage for 27 years, age 53, born in Ohio, both parents born in Ohio, mother of 4 with 4 living (one child could have been from previous marriage, since the censuses mention only 3 children in 1900 and 2 in 1910); single son Will E., age 18, born in Missouri, father born in Illinois and mother in Ohio, farm laborer; single daughter Mary C., age 16, born in Missouri, father born in Illinois and mother in Ohio. Also living with them was a single granddaughter Minnie L. Ridgeway, age 14, born in Missouri, both parents born in Missouri. In 1920 census, George W., head, age 80, married, born in Illinois, father born in Ohio and mother in Illinois, farmer; wife Adella, age 62, married, born in Indiana, father born in Ohio and mother in Pennsylvania.
