Cleveland, aged 81(1819 - CW) years, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. T. L. (Thomas L. and Angeline - CW) Allen, 1721 Lyon street, at 12:45 today. Mr. Cleveland's home was in Harrison County. He came to Des Moines on New Year's day for a visit with his daughter and was taken sick on January 23rd. Nervous trouble, together with old age, was responsible for his death. He leaves surviving him eight children, all of whom are married. All except Mrs. Allen live in western Iowa. The remains will be shipped Monday morning to Magnolia, Iowa, for interment. Mr. Cleveland was for many years a minister of the Christian church, and was well known over the state, especially in Marion County. According to family history, George Cleveland was a minister from Prairie du Chien, Crawford County, WI. His wife's name was Mary. The family moved to Allamakee County, IA about 1855, then to a farm in Marion County, IA before 1863. According to the 1925 Iowa Census, George Cleveland was born in New York, his wife was Mary Royal, born in Virginia. In the 1870 US census for Marion County, Iowa, his age was given as 50, his wife Mary as 48. He is listed as a farmer with real estate valued at $2500 and his personal estate valued at $600. There were four children living in the household at that time: William age 24, Lucy age 15, Louisa age 13, and James age 11. In 1880 the family was living in Allen Twp., Harrison County, Iowa. George was still a farmer. His father's birthpace was MA, his mother's RI. Mary's father was born in PA and her mother in VA
